Wide Receiver Bizzaro World

Wide Receiver Bizzaro WorldNot only are there questions surrounding former fantasy superstar pass catchers like Chad Johnson, Braylon Edwards and Plaxico Burress heading into 2009, but this past week - WR “bizzaro world” continued as 37 year old Joey Galloway got a gig with New England, but Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt remained unemployed.

Superman and Seinfeld fans already know about the “bizzaro world” concept, but for those of you that don’t - it’s basically a backwards planet/universe where things happen the opposite of the way they should.

Like Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth’s recent blunder in which a pedestrian lost their life due to his careless driving. While first and foremost, our sympathies and thoughts go out to the victim and the family after this tragedy, our advice to fantasy owners is to completely avoid Stallworth moving forward.

While that advice may not come as a surprise due to his lack of production over the past couple seasons, this advice may…Avoid Jags WR Matt Jones like the plague as well. Even though the 25 year old, 6′6″ Jones had a very solid season, racking up 64 catches for 750 yards and two TDs in only 12 games in 2008, he’s a complete idiot who invites trouble upon himself. Recently Jones violated probation by drinking beer, then elected to go to jail instead of spending six weeks in a treatment facility.

Choosing treatment would have been a sign that Jones has learned from his mistakes and wants to improve his life both on and off the football field. Choosing jail instead, tells fantasy owners that Jones could care less about what he’s done over the past couple years, and isn’t willing to take the necessary steps to improve. What’s my point from a fantasy perspective? Another suspension will be looming, and next time it’ll be for a full season. Dynasty owners should shake him as soon as possible.

24 year old stud Broncos WR Brandon Marshall was also recently jailed for the fourth time in three years after a spat with this fiance in Atlanta. While charges were dropped, there’s a chance Marshall could be suspended for a couple games in 2009. Marshall may be in a different class all together, and worth the risk, considering he racked up 104 catches for more than 1,200 yards and six TDs in only 15 games in 2008, but the fact remains that he’s only one more off-the-field offense away from being suspended for 8-16 games as well.

So, with several younger WRs blowing opportunities by being stupid in their spare time, where does that leave the older crop, like Holt and Harrison? Well, with Galloway signing with the Patriots to become their WR3 and contribute on a regular basis, and 35 year old Terrell Owens signing as Buffalo’s new WR1, Torry and Marvin should find work soon, right? Holt has always fancied Carolina, where he’d fit in well opposite Steve Smith, however the Panthers, Giants, Jets and Vikings have reportedly denied any interest in the 32 year old veteran, and Harrison hasn’t really received any inquiries.

We could see Holt landing in Miami, and Harrison possibly signing on as a role player in Philly, but the fantasy impact from each of these guys could be slim to none in 2009 and beyond. At the end of 2008, who would have thought Joey Galloway’s fantasy outlook would be better than Holt and Harrison’s entering 2009? Not I… So, fantasy owners beware - in the WR bizzaro world, things are the opposite of the way they should be.
