Cedric Benson Not Focused On Football

cedric-benson.jpgWondering why former fourth overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft Cedric Benson has grossly underachieved during his first three seasons in the NFL? Our sources tell us that the main reason for his lack of burst, speed and quite frankly - understanding of the NFL game - is a major lack of focus. Sources close to the University of Texas football program have told us that since entering the pros and receiving a big payday, he has steadily lost interest in football, and started to pursue other off-the-field interests.

Benson hasn’t exactly made the best decisions off-the-field recently, getting into trouble with the law in May for a boating incident in Texas. Anticipating future performance is part of our job in relaying what we know about players to help our readers make the most informed decisions possible when picking their fantasy team. With that said, avoid Benson at all costs and believe in rookie Matt Forte.

Editor’s Note: The above was written within 24 hours PRIOR to Benson’s most recent drunken driving arrest in Austin, Texas. Wow, we’re on top of our game.

Second Editor’s Note: Benson was released by the Bears on Monday, June 9, 2008, just three days after this article posted.

Paul Posluszny Ready For 2008 - IDP owners need to prepare for a man wearing number 51 to rack up tackles in 2008. Paul Posluszny, a second rounder in 2007, had his season cut short in Week 3 last season with a broken arm. Our sources tell us that he has since not only completely healed, but become easily the hardest working player in Buffalo’s off-season program. Poz is constantly bulking up in the weight room, and has looked phenomenal in practice, making plays all over the field. We highly recommend fantasy owners draft him in the late rounds, as he’ll provide early round value in leagues that award points for tackles. Dynasty owners need to hold onto him, as he hasn’t even begun to reach his ceiling yet. We wouldn’t be surprised to be looking back at the 2007 draft a few years from now and having a heated debate regarding who the best LB was to come out of it - Poz, Patrick Willis or Jon Beason.

Brandon Jackson Could Be An NFL Featured Back - Our sources tell us that Packers second year running back Brandon Jackson has all the tools to become an NFL featured running back, but not in Green Bay. Even though Jackson has thoroughly impressed coaches and teammates while running with the first time offense in practice during Ryan Grant’s contract pursuit, our sources tell us that the Packers are about to lock up Grant to a long term deal that will render Jackson a back-up for his entire time in Green Bay. Still, he’s someone for dynasty owners to keep a close eye on, as the Packers are sure to use him whenever reasonable, and he could become the Michael Turner of Green Bay until he becomes a free agent.

Kiffin Will Be Forced To Feature McFadden - Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin has a great problem at running back right now. Incumbent starter Justin Fargas is locked up long term after putting up 1,000 yards last season, and is looking great in camp. Second year beast Michael Bush is proving to be extremely versatile as well, being a power back who has been lining up at wide receiver also. Bush also has uncanny breakaway speed. All of this is to say that despite the options Kiffin has, our sources tell us that owner Al Davis will likely force his hand into featuring Darren McFadden. Our sources believe that Davis doesn’t care about who starts at RB - nor does Kiffin - but that Davis will demand that McFadden has a certain amount of touches per game in 2008. It seems like a weird concept, but makes sense that Davis would make such a demand - and we actually agree with him.

Jeremy Shockey Update - Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported recently that Jeremy Shockey could report to the Giants’ mandatory mini-camp in mid-June. Our sources have heard things that imply that could very easily be true. We’ve heard Shockey has gone through stages since the Giants’ Super Bowl run. He’s been humbled a bit, then wanted to be traded, then came to grips with the fact he’d be in New York and became very hungry. All of this gives us confidence that Shockey can come in and have his best fantasy season yet in 2008.
