Can Brett Favre Help You Win?

Can Brett Favre Help You Win? You’ve probably already read about the Fantasy Football Open Championship here on No-Offseason.com. Well, our No-Offseason.com squad was selected last week, on the night of the Brett Favre trade. Ironically, we had waited on a QB after a flurry of signal caller activity was detected early, and Favre fell to us in the 11th round, right before the trade to New York was announced. It felt like it was meant to be - but will Favre help us win in 2008?

That’s what we’ve been asking ourselves since the draft. We had locked up David Garrard - a safety pick - in round nine, and we knew that he wasn’t really a guy that can propel a fantasy team over the edge, rather a potential rock that puts up 220 yards and two TDs on his best weeks, and not much less than that on his bad weeks. So, landing Favre - who has the potential to throw for 330 yards on any given week - in round 11 seemed exciting. But what’s the criteria for a fantasy team to be able to win with Favre as their starter?

Well, we had the 10th overall pick in a 10-team snake draft. The starting line-up requirements are 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 flex (QB, RB, WR, TE). It’s important to note that this is a non-PPR format, in which passing TDs are worth four points, but all other TDs are worth six points. You wouldn’t believe how many signal callers flew off the boards in rounds 1-5. Brady, Brees, Romo, Manning, McNabb, Cutler, Roethlisberger, Palmer, Anderson, and on and on. Ridiculous. Well, apparently these teams want to start two QBs - one as their flex - which could be interesting. We, however, decided to go for big-play potential and depth throughout our entire line-up, being that TDs are so much more valuable due to the non-PPR element.

So, with the 10th overall pick, we snagged Frank Gore, followed by Terrell Owens. Darren McFadden and T.J. Houshmandzadeh followed. Then, Jeremy Shockey and Brandon Jacobs, followed by Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez. Through eight rounds, three solid RBs, three solid WRs and two solid TEs (remember the flex spot). Then, we went after Garrard and Anthony Gonzalez, followed by a Chester Taylor/Brett Favre combo. Rounding out our roster were sleepers like Pierre Thomas, Brady Quinn, Deion Branch, Jerry Porter, Michael Bush and Greg Olsen.

The strategy behind gathering all of the offensive depth we could was simple - there are no trades allowed in this league, and I didn’t want to leave any one on the waiver wire for any other team to pick up later.

So, with the Tampa Bay Bucs defense and Jason Elam added in the final rounds to round out our starting line-up, we’re feeling pretty good. Favre will likely start more than he sits for us, due to his big game potential, while we have Garrard to fall back on in case the Favre experiment doesn’t work - and Brady Quinn as a flier who could pan out if something happens to Derek Anderson.

So, if you’re looking to win with Favre in a seasonal league, make sure you have the following ingredients - stud RBs and WRs drafted early - a solid, consistent fall back QB option - and you’re obviously waiting on a QB, because Favre shouldn’t really warrant a selection in the top six rounds.

Now, in a league like FFOC, Favre as your flex paired with a guy like Drew Brees as your starter, could be an interesting recipe for victory - however, make sure you don’t do it at the expense of solid RB or WR starters.
