Don’t Take Tom Brady Early

Dont Take Tom Brady Early No disrespect to NFL.com’s Michael Fabiano, you do great work, but I just don’t understand your thought process taking Tom Brady in round one of a recent mock draft. Folks, although Fabiano obviously knows what he’s talking about, I definitely wouldn’t follow his example of taking Brady in round one.

Trends like this, and others, have me seriously disturbed. I was in the draft, selecting right after Fabiano himself, and was pleased to see him take Brady, so I could swoop up the man he should have taken, Brady’s real life teammate Randy Moss.

Let someone else waste an early pick on Brady this year, who won’t throw 50 TDs again - the statistical peak theory.

Lastly, on my high horse about not taking Brady early, I’ll add that with New Orleans Saints signal caller Drew Brees now in the discussion about who the top fantasy QB is, owners better be REALLY sure that Brady can repeat his 2007 performance. Why? Because with Jeremy Shockey now in the picture in New Orleans, you better believe that Brees could rival Brady in the stat column in 2008. I’d much rather have Brees or Tony Romo in round three or four, or Ben Roethlisberger, Donovan McNabb, Derek Anderson or Carson Palmer in rounds five through seven, than Brady in round one.

Other players who I’ve consistently seen go way too early are WRs Roddy White and Kevin Curtis. White had a breakout third season in Atlanta, hauling in an impressive 83 balls for 1,202 yards and six scores. The problem is that the Falcons had a pass-heavy offense for the entire season, and were playing from behind every week. In 2008, a new offensive plan will be installed, as head coach Mike Smith and OC Mike Mularkey will absolutely pound the rock a ton, and try to line up new PK Jason Elam for 30 yard field goals all day long. Don’t expect an improvement from White - let someone else take him early.

The same goes for Curtis, who went in the sixth round of a recent draft I participated in - before Indy’s Marvin Harrison. I’ll tell you right now, there’s no way Curtis outscores Harrison in 2008. Be the guy that takes Harrison in round six, and you may have a shot at a title. Be the guy that takes Curtis, and you’ll be wondering why you took a guy who recorded one third of his 2007 fantasy points in one game.

Other interesting things I noticed is that the earliest former fantasy stud Rudi Johnson is going is round six, and nobody has drafted Travis Henry - both of which make perfect sense to me.
