As fantasy owners get ready for Week 1, there are several question marks surrounding individual defensive players. Can Mario Williams take over Jared Allen as fantasy’s number one defensive end? How will the Giants fare with Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka at DE? Can Jacksonville’s Mike Peterson and New Orleans’ Jonathan Vilma make comebacks? And, who will boom and bust?
Fantasy owners want to know…
Question - Why is Mario Williams Better Than Jared Allen?
Answer - Don’t underestimate the difficulty of switching teams. Jared Allen will still be one of the league’s best defensive ends, and playing next to Kevin and Pat Williams will surely result in some solid fantasy digits being posted this season, however, Houston’s third year man showed signs in 2007 of being even more dominant than Allen. As the 6′7″ Williams continues to understand the pro game, and enter his prime, he could end up being one of the best defensive ends the game has ever seen, and completely revolutionize the position. Watch out, the only thing that could keep him from breaking Michael Strahan’s single season sack record soon would be injuries.
Question - Who will boom?
Answer - Captain obvious says second year LBs Patrick Willis, David Harris and Jon Beason, but expect Paul Posluszny, Darrelle Revis, Aaron Ross, Kenyon Coleman and Freddie Keiaho to all have solid weeks.
Question - Who will bust?
Answer - We’re concerned about Aaron Schobel, Terrell Suggs, Jerod Mayo and Elvis Dumervil getting off to slow starts in 2008.
Question - Who is the sleeper of the year at DL, LB and DB?
Answer - Minnesota’s 24 year old third year DE Ray Edwards, who predicted earlier this off-season that he’d lead the NFL in sacks, is our choice for sleeper of the year at DE. Edwards plays opposite Jared Allen, and next to Kevin and Pat Williams - aka - the best defensive tackles in the league - which means he’ll always have single coverage. Our sleeper of the year at LB has been mentioned already, and it was a close call between Jonathan Vilma and Paul Posluszny, but ultimately Poz, the Bills’ second year man, won it. He will be a beast at MLB, and should benefit from having big Marcus Stroud occupying blockers in front of him. At DB, guys like New York’s Aaron Ross, Minnesota’s Cedric Griffin and even Dallas’ Adam “don’t call me Pacman” Jones were under consideration, but the sleeper DB of the year goes to Tennessee’s Cortland Finnegan. This Samford product has solidified himself as a leader on Tennessee’s strong defense, and is just as involved in stopping the run as he is in stopping the pass, which results in very consistent numbers.
