Fantasy Impact: Brett Favre Returns

Fantasy Impact: Brett Favre Returns Well, the situation we’ve been waiting for a while to write about finally appears like it has a resolution. 38 year old Brett Favre has officially returned to Green Bay for training camp. An “open competition” will apparently start today for the Packers starting QB gig - and if it does, there’s no question who will win.

I know, I know, the Packers have said repeatedly throughout this crazy off-season, that Aaron Rodgers is their starting QB. He’s their guy. Not Brett Favre.

Well, that all appeared to change yesterday, when the legend that wears number 4 landed in Green Bay. The team completely contradicted themselves, by saying that there will now be an “open competition” for the team’s starting QB job between Favre and Rodgers.

Come on. In one corner is a legend who owns just about every major passing record in NFL history, who also happened to throw for 4,157 yards and 28 TDs last year, leading the Packers to the NFC Championship Game. In the other corner is a man who only has 59 career NFL passing attempts.

At this point, one of three things can happen though. First of all, Favre could still be traded - and apparently, per the terms of his reinstatement, he cannot veto any trade. So, he really could end up anywhere that will take him. These destinations could include Tampa Bay or the New York Jets. Or, this “open competition” could happen. If that’s the case, there’s no doubt Favre will win. He gives the Packers the best chance to win, and they are a team built to win now. Plus, Mike McCarthy does not want to be the only reason why Favre’s consecutive starts streak is snapped.

We believe the most likely scenario though is for Favre to stay in Green Bay and start all 16 games in 2008. If this is the case, it is phenomenal for the fantasy value of Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and even Donald Lee, Ryan Grant, James Jones and rookie Jordy Nelson.

To make matters really complicated, a third possibility exists. He is on the cover of Madden `09, which means an injury could be imminent. Kidding of course, kind of.

We know that this isn’t the end of this story - trust me. But right now, if you have to make decisions for your fantasy squad - make them with the assumption that Favre will be the Packers’ main signal caller in 2008.
