Fantasy Impact: Chris Johnson

Fantasy Impact: Chris Johnson I know, I know, it’s just the preseason - but fantasy owners have always been able to use the preseason as a gage for predicting what will happen from September through December. But, can one 66-yard TD run really make one player’s draft stock soar that much?

In the case of Tennessee Titans 2008 first round draft pick Chris Johnson - the simple answer is “yes.” But not because all there is to him is one play. There’s much more to him than that.

There’s the scorching 4.2 forty yard dash time he posted in Indy in February. There’s the solid Senior Bowl performance as well. But, most of all, there’s the constant jocking by head coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger about this guy. Fish and ‘Dinger have been like little kids in a candy store for the entire off-season, raving about how versatile Johnson is - saying they’ll line him out wide, and feature him in the slot often.

Recently, Heimerdinger, who returns from his two year stint in Denver to take over the Titans offense that he built with Steve McNair, Eddie George and Derrick Mason, said that Johnson will be used on first and second down often in 2008 and throughout his career.

Then came the 66-yard run, that led to the six carry, 77 yard, one TD performance in his preseason debut. Skeptics will say that Quinton Ganther - who probably won’t even make the team - ran for 115 yards and two scores on eight carries - so how valid can Johnson’s performance be? They’ll also point to LenDale White’s 1,000 yard season last year and call Johnson “this year’s Brandon Jackson.”

Smart fantasy owners will understand how versatile he is, and see that the Titans invested a first round pick in this guy, and bank on the fact that he’ll at the very least be a PPR monster.

For the record, we are extremely high on Johnson, and not so much on LenDale White. Johnson will contribute and be a solid fantasy RB3 in 2008, while having a ton of dynasty potential. Before the 66-yard run, he was off the radar a bit - now he’s on it full steam ahead going into the regular season, so snatch him by round five in seasonal leagues, and by pick five in rookie-only drafts.
