Fantasy Impact: Kyle Orton

Considering the Bears had an absolutely putrid passing offense last season (and overall offense in general), and the Chicago franchise has really had a signal caller worth mentioning since Jim McMahon, is it really even worth mentioning Kyle Orton’s name in fantasy discussions?
The answer is yes.
It’s important not to count anyone out this time of year folks. Crazy things have happened. Guys like Olandis Gary have rushed for 1,000 yards for crying out loud.
Although the Bears’ offense has struggled, don’t forget that Rex Grossman, whom Orton has momentarily beat out, actually threw for 3,100 yards and 23 scores just two short seasons ago. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner is no slouch. He knows what he’s doing, but hasn’t had the talent to bring his vision for the passing game to fruition, and keep it going consistently.
Another thing fantasy owners need to keep in mind is the fact that Chicago’s defense isn’t what it was in 2005 or 2006. Sorry, but it isn’t. This means the Bears – like it or not – will be playing from behind more than ever in 2008.
Last year, Adrian Peterson had 21 catches in a four game span towards the end of last season, because the passing game was so putrid that the check down was the only thing that was available. This year, with Devin Hester stretching the field, and Greg Olsen one year more improved at the tight end position, the possession passing attack will have more options than just the running back.
The loss of Bernard Berrian hurts, but only to a certain extent. Hester is now in place to provide the deep threat, and guys like Brandon Lloyd - who is believed to be a Week 1 starter - Mark Bradley and rookie Earl Bennett could earn some time eventually as complimentary possession threats to Olsen.
Look – I’ll be the first to tell you that the Bears QB isn’t desirable at all from a fantasy perspective, but inevitably, due to injuries and other factors – especially in deep leagues – some of you will have to go down that road this season, so I’m just helping prepare you for that moment – so you know what you’re getting yourself into.
