Impact: Marques Colston Out 4-6 Weeks We knew something was up. The Saints just don’t throw for 343 yards and three TDs, spreading the ball around the field, and only get their best receiver the ball three times for 26 yards. As it turns out, Marques Colston was injured, and has undergone thumb surgery that will keep him out four to six weeks. What should fantasy owners expect as a result of this?

Well, while our condolences certainly go out to Colston owners, there is absolutely a clear cut answer to this dilemma. All Colston owners should immediately go add David Patten or Devery Henderson via waivers. But do it fast, because most other folks in your league will want to add them as well, and with good reason.

Patten now becomes Drew Brees’ favorite wide receiver. Notice I said wide receiver and not pass catcher. That honor still goes to Reggie Bush, and will likely shift even more so to Jeremy Shockey. Henderson becomes valuable in all leagues, but even more so in those that don’t award points for receptions. He’s a big play guy who will get into the end zone, while Patten is more of a reception hog.

So, make no mistake about it, the loss of Colston really increases the fantasy value of all of the Saints other wide receivers, including second year man Robert Meachem, who now will likely move into the third WR role and get a chance to shine. Meachem should also be considered valuable in all leagues, as he has a much higher ceiling than Patten and Henderson, and could reap larger long term rewards from this occurrence.

So - what does Colston’s absence do to the fantasy value of Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey?

For Brees, not much. Life will go on without Colston in the Saints’ high-powered attack. Brees will still get his 300 yards and three scores a game, and now they’re just more likely to go Shockey’s way.

For Shockey, it means that those Brees passes are now much more likely to come his way - and expect them too.

For Bush, it means that defenses will be keying in on stopping him more, but don’t let that bother you, he’ll still be a force to be reckoned with in points per reception leagues.
