Kurt Could Be The Man - For Now

When Matt Leinart threw three interceptions against the Raiders during preseason Week 3, the writing was on the wall - Kurt Warner was likely to start in Week 1, against the division rival 49ers. Sure enough, less than six hours later, ESPN made it official - but Ken Whisenhunt still hasn’t announced who the Cardinals starter is.
Look, there’s no doubt that the fantasy value of the 37 year old signal caller has gone up since Leinart’s Week 3 performance and the possibility that he could start Week 1, especially because of what he did statistically as the Cards’ starter last season, racking up 3,400 yards and 27 TDs in 14 games (only 11 starts) - however, I’m here to tell you not to expect those types of overall numbers from Warner this season.
Why? Well, it’s not that he’s not capable of lighting up the scoreboard, it’s just that the organization as to hand the reigns over to Leinart at some point this year. The third year man from US hasn’t been horrible, he’s just been inconsistent.
He hasn’t been really given the chance that other first round QBs have received, such as Joey Harrington in Detroit, Tim Couch in Cleveland and Eli Manning in New York. In short, he’s not a bust - the kid can play.
I’d be shocked if Leinart is flat out benched this season and not given the opportunity to get out on the field and learn from his mistakes. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards as a rookie, and has been plagued with injuries ever since.
Speaking of injuries, another reason not to plan on riding Warner to the promised land is his knack for missing time.
Make no mistake, Warner is now draftable in the late rounds, and with two of the game’s most explosive WRs to throw the rock to, he is capable of putting up huge digits, but don’t count Leinart out either. The 6′5″, 230 lb. 25 year old may not look comfortable under center yet, but he still has extremely high upside and a bright future ahead of him.
