LaMont Joins Laurence In New England

LaMont Joins Laurence In New England In 2005, LaMont Jordan rushed for 1,025 yards, nine TDs, and caught 70 balls for 563 yards and two additional scores as the featured running back for the Oakland Raiders. That same season, Randy Moss hauled in 60 passes for 1,005 yards and eight TDs as Jordan’s teammate in Oakland. Now, the two have re-joined as teammates in New England. The Patriots’ experience has obviously kept Moss’ career going strong - but will it do the same for Jordan?

Jordan, who will turn 30 in November, is far from the same player he was during his breakout 2005 campaign, and a shell of the man that walked with a thousand-yard swagger just three seasons ago. Since then, his head has been messed with, being benched in favor of Justin Fargas after rushing for more than 420 yards in the first four weeks of 2007. Not only that, but his knees have been messed with along the way, and have been part of the reason his production has declined since the only 1,000-yard season of his career.

The Patriots were quick to swoop him up after the Raiders finally released him, after weeks of toying with his head and attempting to trade him.

The fresh start in Foxborough will be great for the veteran, as he’ll likely be rejuvenated - the same way Moss was after coming East. However, Jordan’s story will be much different, as he will absolutely be backing up incumbent starter and 23 year old third year man Laurence Maroney.

Maroney finished 2007 with a bang, rushing for approximately 600 yards and seven TDs in his last seven games. The Patriots have already come out and said that Jordan will play a complimentary role to Maroney in 2008, serving as a nice “change-of-pace-back,” the way he began his career with the New York Jets.

New England has always been good at turning veteran backs into solid pass catching threats out of the backfield, as Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris excelled in that role in 2007. Expect Jordan to overtake them and become a solid fantasy RB4 or RB5 option in deep seasonal points per reception leagues. However - don’t expect anything more than that, unless Maroney suffers an injury.

Maroney is still the man in New England, and while his seasonal value may take a small hit - his dynasty owners have absolutely nothing to worry about.
