Fantasy owners have been enamored with a certain Steve Smith since his phenomenal breakout 2005 campaign, however, we’ve looked heavily into some potential second year sleeper WRs, and heading into 2008 it looks like the Giants’ second year man with the same name could turn some heads.
Many so-called NFL experts attributed the blossoming of Giants QB Eli Manning late in the season last year to the absence of Jeremy Shockey. A closer look tells a different story though - as it was actually the addition of a healthy rookie WR named Steve Smith to the line-up, that truly helped Manning.
The USC product has all the tools to become a top possession receiver at the NFL level, very similar to a Laveranues Coles type player.
Although he only caught eight passes during the entire regular season last year, he came on strong in the playoffs, hauling in 14 balls for 152 yards, including five catches for 50 yards in the Super Bowl. The thing people have to understand is that Smith was hurt most of the season, and didn’t have an opportunity to play until very late.
Entering 2008, however, he has a firm grasp on the WR3 role in New York, and is expected to pick up the slack as a top option in the passing game with Jeremy Shockey gone. Also, Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress are both over 30 now, and nursing various health problems. 2006 second round pick Sinorice Moss has virtually played himself out of a role leaving Smith a HUGE opportunity.
In 12-team PPR leagues, look for Smith to be a very, very solid WR3 candidate, while in dynasty formats, he’s a great buy low guy - who you won’t be able to “purchase” for a low price much longer.
Jump on him now, before he starts off 2008 with a bang.
