Drafting TEs Back-To-Back

Drafting TEs Back-To-Back Some fantasy leagues have an RB/WR/TE flex position. In one of my most recent expert league drafts, I used a strategy to take advantage of this starting line-up quirk. With the first overall pick, I took my guy, Adrian Peterson, followed by WR-combo Marques Colston and Steve Smith in rounds two and three. Then, I did something extremely unconventional in rounds four and five.

Sitting in the fourth round of a 12-team points per reception fantasy football league, where we’re required to start a QB, two RBs, three WRs, one TE and one flex (RB/WR/TE) spot, I had a brilliant idea flash through my brain.

Why not take two TEs right now, back-to-back? Unconventional wisdom? I would say so. After all, many fantasy heads don’t really start targeting their TE until rounds six or seven, sometimes not even choosing a back-up in the later rounds.

Well, the problem with that line of thinking is that it’s extremely rare to find a sleeper TE later in the season. Other than the top guys, the pickens are usually pretty slim throughout the season. Not that you absolutely need a top tight end to win a fantasy championship, but I guarantee that your odds go up huge if you can snag one. And here, I had an opportunity to snag two.

Other players on the board included Drew Brees, young WRs Dwayne Bowe and Calvin Johnson, and RBs Julius Jones and Chris Johnson - all players I really like. However, believe it or not, my decision to book-end it was easier than you may think.

Yes, I needed an RB2 and a WR3 still, and didn’t yet have a starting signal caller. However, if you know me, you now that I believe you can always wait until the later rounds to find value at QB. Even though I knew I’d need to wait 24 more picks to draft an RB2 if I pulled the trigger on my TE combo, I knew it would be worth it. First of all, not only will I be virtually guaranteed an edge on the competition at that position every week, but I’ll also be taking away the opportunity for someone else to grab a top TE. Oh yeah, and I can start both of them at the same time every week if I so choose.
