August 11, 2008

Dont Forget The Other Steve Smith Fantasy owners have been enamored with a certain Steve Smith since his phenomenal breakout 2005 campaign, however, we’ve looked heavily into some potential second year sleeper WRs, and heading into 2008 it looks like the Giants’ second year man with the same name could turn some heads. Keep An Eye On Second Year WRs

July 8, 2008

dwayne-bowe.jpg One year ago, Denver’s Brandon Marshall absolutely lit the world on fire in this second NFL season, hauling in 102 passes for more than 1,300 yards and seven TDs. New Orleans’ Marques Colston caught 98 balls for 1,202 yards and 11 TDs in his second season, and Green Bay’s Greg Jennings also had a breakout season, scoring 12 times while racking up more than 900 yards and 50 catches. The point is that second year WRs are now truly worthy of watching, as KC’s Dwayne Bowe and others threaten to be potent fantasy weapons in 2008. Read more

Bryant Johnson To Be Niners WR1…

June 20, 2008

Word out of 49ers practice all off-season is that 26 year old 6′3″ free agent acquisition Bryant Johnson has been working with the 49ers first team offense consistently, and that the former Arizona Cardinal will be given every opportunity to be the team’s number one wide receiver in 2008.

No-Offseason Take: Johnson absolutely has the skill set to be a fantasy weapon, especially in Mike Martz’s offense. The fact that they haven’t brought in any other WRs to challenge for his post tells us that they’re very confident in his ability. Expect him to start opposite Isaac Bruce, with Arnaz Battle and Jason Hill playing roles as third and fourth WRs. Right now, it appears Alex Smith is the front runner for QB duties, and if he can perform well, Johnson - a former top 20 overall pick in the NFL Draft - will finally start reaching that first round potential.

Javon Walker To Make Full Recovery…

June 19, 2008

Updating previous reports regarding the Javon Walker situation, Sirius NFL Radio reported last night that Walker has been released from the hospital and is on his way back to Oakland to rehab and continue his preparation for the 2008 regular season. Head coach Lane Kiffin then seemed optimistic with media about Walker being able to make a full recovery for the 2008 season.

This is great news, as he apparently dodged a huge bullet (figuratively). Still, we’re not crazy about him as more than a stretch WR3 option in 2008. We’ll continue to monitor Walker’s progress, as he’s definitely a fantasy x-factor due to his past stat lines.

Deion Branch Won’t Be Ready For Week 1…

June 19, 2008

Based on reports coming from Seattle media outlets, it does not appear that Seahawks WR Deion Branch will be ready to go by training camp, or by Week 1 of the NFL season. He’s behind in his rehab from ACL surgery, and this aligns with reports earlier this off-season that he may have to start the regular season on the PUP list, meaning he’d have to miss at least the first six regular season games.

We recommend owners stay away from Branch in seasonal drafts, but monitor him in late August to potentially add as a waiver wire sleeper early in the regular season.

Dynasty owners should probably just hang onto him since his value can only go up from here.

Terry Glenn Update…

June 19, 2008

Cowboys WR Terry Glenn continues to have health issues. His knee is bone-on-bone, and he’s almost 34 years old. ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that Glenn has backed off his comments earlier about wanting out of Dallas. We think his comments were in frustration with the fact that owner Jerry Jones had asked him to sign an injury waiver before practicing.

Cutting through the clutter, things just don’t look good for Glenn’s future fantasy value. We recommend staying away from him, as Dallas’ offense was more explosive than every in 2007 without him completely.
