Portis’ workload to decrease

The News
According to the Washington Times, the Redskins are going to give Ladell Betts more carries in an attempt to keep Clinton Portis fresh all season.

Our View
Portis tired significantly in the second half last season and the Skins want to get Betts involved on third downs and even give him an additional series or two per half to keep Portis fresh. Portis averaged 5.0 yards per carry in the first half last season, but just 3.5 in the second. He also failed to eclipse more than 80 yards in any of the season's final five games. This move will obviously boost Betts' fanatsy value, but if it works the way the Redskins want it to it shouldn't hurt Portis'. If the extra rest improves his second half performance, his numbers should be similar to last season's despite a loss of touches.
