We updated the first round of our 2009 NFL Mock Draft a few days ago. Now, we proudly bring you the updated version of round two, and we assure you that there’s just as much fantasy impact to analyze here as there was the first time around. Stick with us as we continue to mock ourselves all the way into April.
Be sure to check out rounds one and three of our NFL Mock Draft as well!
33. Detroit Lions - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee - Ayers’ stock is rising due to his solid Senior Bowl performance. He may even go in the first round. Detroit absolutely needs a legit starter at DE opposite 2008 rookie surprise Cliff Avrill. Ayers would have solid IDP value if he lands here and learns under Jim Schwartz.
34. New England Patriots (from Kansas City) - Conner Barwin, Cincinnati DE/OLB - The former tight end impressed scouts at the combine, and has drawn early comparisons to Mike Vrabel, as he’s versatile enough to play both OLB and DE. The Pats need depth at both positions, which makes him a very solid fit, and someone to watch in IDP leagues. If he ends up in a 4-3 set, he’ll have immediate value as a DE, but in this case he’d end up in a 3-4 alignment as an OLB - which wouldn’t be desirable for fantasy owners.
35. St. Louis Rams - Brian Robiskie, WR, OSU - The Rams need a big WR opposite Donnie Avery, and Robiskie - a 6′3″ pass catcher - has great hands, is a man among boys, and he looked great at the combine. He has the skills to be a very solid possession receiver at the next level, as his route running skills are refined. He doesn’t have breakaway speed, but he understands the game and knows how to get open. His father is Terry Robiskie, WRs coach for the Atlanta Falcons.
36. Cleveland Browns - Andre Brown, RB, North Carolina State (pictured) – Brown didn’t post earth shattering stats at NC State, but he has great size, and looked very solid in the Senior Bowl. His stock is rising, and RBs flew off the board in the first round of our mock. The Browns absolutely need help at this position, and Brown is the next best fit. If he lands here, expect Brown’s fantasy potential to explode and look for him to become a sure fire early second round dynasty rookie pick with high potential after his very solid performance at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine.
37. Seattle Seahawks - Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech - Johnson would fit well in Seattle - period. They took Lawrence Jackson in the first round last year, but as Patrick Kerney slows down and becomes more injury prone, the Seahawks will need another pass rushing threat. The 6′7″ Johnson gives them a ton of explosiveness. We love this kid’s IDP potential. He ran an impressive 4.75 forty at the combine, and showed great athleticism in the broad jump, vertical jump and 20 yard shuttle. He may not slip this far though, as many experts have him going in round one.
38. Cincinnati Bengals - James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State - Everyone with a pulse has him going to either the Giants in round one or the Lions in round two, but this just makes sense. His draft stock has slipped, the Bengals absolutely need help at LB, and Laurinaitis is versatile enough to play inside or outside. He would complement Keith Rivers very well as both players could play either WLB or MLB.
39. Jacksonville Jaguars - Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State - The 6′5″ Freeman is a total project with extremely high upside, and the Jags need a QB of the future after David Garrard poops out in a few years. Freeman is an interesting long term fantasy prospect, especially if he has a guy like Jeremy Maclin to throw the rock to down the road. Many draft experts have him going 17th overall to the Jets. We really don’t think he’s a first round pick.
40. Oakland Raiders - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama - Several teams have dropped him from their draft boards due to his off-the-field issues and inconsistent work ethic, but that won’t stop Al Davis from taking a gamble on the first-round talent.
41. Green Bay Packers - D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt - The Packers will need to fill this position as Charles Woodson ages and slow down. Plus, with a high scoring offense, many opponents will need to pass a lot to keep up with them, and Moore will play the nickel role often as a rookie.
42. Buffalo Bills - Alex Mack, C, California - Buffalo needs a center perhaps worse than any other NFL team, and they hit the jackpot here with Mack. With an improved offensive line, Buffalo’s offense will be extremely explosive in 2009.
43. San Francisco 49ers - Rashad Johnson, S, Alabama - Johnson, a former walk-on at Alabama, is now the standout safety of the 2009 NFL Draft class. We expect him to go at around this point in the draft, and to actually have a serious shot at becoming a legit IDP option by mid-season 2009.
44. Miami Dolphins (from Washington Redskins) - Max Unger, C/OG, Oregon - Bill Parcells is always looking for a great value, and he gets one here while improving his offensive line.
45. New York Giants (from New Orleans Saints) - Ramses Barden, WR, Cal Poly - At 6′6″, 227, Barden is the tallest and most physical WR in the draft. He also hauled in 18 TDs in each of his last two seasons and would likely be a huge threat in the red zone at the NFL level. His weaknesses include getting off the line and creating separation, but he has the highest ceiling of any WR outside of Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin, and could be the next Plaxico Burress.
46. Houston Texans - Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest - Mark my words, the Texans will compete for the AFC South crown next season, and they’ll do it with defense. They need some help at corner, and Smith is a solid fit.
47. New England Patriots - (from San Diego Chargers) - Sean Smith, CB, Utah - At 6′3″, 214, Sean Smith is this year’s version of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. In fact, the Patriots may even look to trade up to get him in the draft, as his stock could easily rise rapidly following the combine.
48. Denver Broncos - Evander “Ziggy” Hood, DT, Missouri - Denver absolutely needs a ton of help on defense, and it starts in the trenches. Many draft experts have him going in the late first round to Indy, so if he fell here, he’d be a great value.
49. Chicago Bears - Mohamed Massaquoi, WR, Georgia - Catching balls from Matthew Stafford at the college level, combined with a solid showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, could vault the 6′2″ Massaquoi into a mid-second round selection as a mini-run is being made on pass catchers. The Bears badly need a legit WR, and a guy like Massaquoi could come in and contribute right away.
50. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut - The Bucs drafted Aqib Talib last year, and Ronde Barber is nearly 34 years old. It’s time to keep stocking the cupboard at corner. Oh yeah, and new head coach Raheem Morris is a secondary guy at heart.
51. Dallas Cowboys - Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan - Perhaps the most underrated player in this year’s draft, Delmas will provide great value to whoever selects him. Dallas may not really be smart enough to do so, but they need to replace Roy Williams (safety) ASAP.
52. New York Jets - Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma - With Laveranues Coles rapidly aging and showing signs of deteriorating quickness, speed and separation ability, and Jerricho Cotchery’s injury issues and inconsistent play in 2008, WR has all of the sudden become a bit of a need area for the Jets. We like Iglesias, and see him as a solid possession man at the pro level.
53. Philadelphia Eagles - Andrew Levitre, OG, Oregon State - Not only does Philly have less holes to fill than most teams, but the value of getting a solid OG this late on the first day is too good to pass up.
54. Minnesota Vikings - William Moore, S, Missouri - With Darren Sharper gone, it’s a solid idea for the Vikes to bring in some competition for last year’s second rounder Tyrell Johnson. Moore is versatile and has good cover skills, which makes him a great fit for Leslie Frazier’s defense.
55. Atlanta Falcons - Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech - The young Atlanta squad needs serious help in the secondary, and needs to use this opportunity to draft a corner. Harris has solid speed and quickness, and good cover skills.
56. Miami Dolphins - Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio State - A Joey Porter clone? With the “mad sacker” approaching 32 years of age, it’s time to start lining up his long term replacement.
57. Baltimore Ravens - Louis Murphy, WR, Florida - Not a stat freak at a run-first school, Murphy has NFL size (6′3″, 205), solid speed and reliable hands. He’d be a perfect fit for the Ravens, who need to start grooming a solid WR corps.
58. Indianapolis Colts - Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma - Indy needs some help on the interior of their line, and the once first round projected Robinson will be a great value here.
59. New England Patriots - Asher Allen, CB, Georgia - Would the Pats really take two CBs in the second round? With Deltha O’Neal and Ellis Hobbs back there, and more and more spread offenses to defend at the NFL level - absolutely.
60. Carolina Panthers - Nate Davis, QB, Ball State - This may be a bit of a reach, but the Panthers need to start thinking about the future of the QB position, as Jake Delhomme isn’t getting any younger, and Matt Moore is not the answer long term.
61. New York Giants - Trevor Canfield, OG, Cincinnati - The G-Men are in a very similar boat as the Eagles in this spot, and should use this opportunity to bolster their line depth.
62. Tennessee Titans - Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri - We mocked the Titans with Darrius Heyward-Bey in round one, but even still, they need to add yet another pass catching weapon. Bo Scaife and Alge Crumpler don’t scare defenses, but Coffman, who hauled in 90 passes for 987 yards and 10 TDs in 2008, certainly could. He has great quickness, hands, size and big play ability. He’s looking a bit like this year’s John Carlson.
63. Arizona Cardinals - Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia - The Whiz is building the Steelers Jr. out in the desert, and in order to be the Steelers, you need a plethora of pass-rushing 3-4 outside backers. Sintim could be someone to watch in IDP leagues. We’re hearing he could end up going at the top of the second round, perhaps to Seattle or even Detroit.
64. Pittsburgh Steelers - Fili Moala, DT, USC - The Steelers addressed their needs along the offensive line in round one of our mock, now they take the best defensive lineman available.
