A New Number Two

A New Number TwoThere’s a ton of discussion happening on our forums regarding who the top 2009 seasonal fantasy football picks will be - or should be. While it may seem a little early to project such a thing, it’s already pretty clear to us that there’s “a new number two” in town.

As you probably already know, we here at No-Offseason.com cater to several different types of league scoring systems, as well as dynasty and keeper formats, in addition to standard seasonal leagues. Also, there’s plenty of time before kick-off of the 2009 NFL season, and there’s several months for you to prepare for your seasonal drafts. However, for the sake of a fun discussion, let’s take an early look at our top five overall seasonal draft picks - for a standard points per reception format.

1. Adrian Peterson, Vikings RB - After rushing for 1,757 yards and 10 TDs in his second season, the haus out of Oklahoma is basically guaranteed 25 touches per ball game, and - I don’t care what anyone says - is still a threat to score every single time he touches the rock. With 19 receptions as a rookie, and 21 as a sophomore, look for Peterson to catch 30 or more balls in his third season.

2. Matt Forte, Bears RB - After a ridiculously good rookie season, many will be expecting a bit of a sophomore slump. However, the Bears offense runs through this kid, and there’s no way he’s not getting the ball 30 times a game in 2009. That’s the kind of stuff fantasy owners should be looking for when selecting second overall. Oh yeah, and he freaking garnered more than 1,700 yards from scrimmage (more than 1,200 on the ground), with 12 TDs and 64 receptions - as a rookie. There’s nothing gimmicky about this kid, he’s just flat out hard to bring down.

3. Brian Westbrook, Eagles RB - The 29 year old missed two (nearly three) full games with knee injuries this season, and still out-produced all but four RBs in PPR leagues. With more than 1,300 yards from scrimmage, 54 catches, and 14 total TDs, he’s still a top five seasonal pick.

4. Michael Turner, Falcons RB - While many of DeAngelo Williams’ 20 total TDs came from 20 yards and out this season, nearly all of Michael Turner’s 17 scores came from within the 10 yard line. What does that mean? Well, quite simply, the Falcons set him up for scores the same way the Seahawks used to with Shaun Alexander. Turner is a freaking workhorse, and even with Jerious Norwood in the picture, look for him to be a 1,500 plus yard, 15 TD back for years to come. The Falcons have a bright future with Matt Ryan at QB, and Mike Turner’s stat line will be the beneficiary.

5. Steven Jackson, Rams RB - Why SJax here and not Maurice Jones-Drew or DeAngelo Williams? Well, while those two guys are certainly worthy of being talked about as top five picks, the fact that Jackson put together back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons with six or more total TDs, and caught 37 balls in 2007, and 53 in 2008 - in 12 games or less each year - is pretty amazing. If the 25 year old can play a full 16 game season in 2009, he’ll warrant a top five selection - mark my words.
