Has Brett Favre Played His Last NFL Game?

Has Brett Favre Played His Last NFL Game? Over the past two weeks, Brett Favre has found himself in the news. First of all, his Jets collapsed at the end of the 2008 season, causing teammates Thomas Jones and Kerry Rhodes to throw Favre under the bus and criticize his play and actions to the media. Oh, yeah, then there’s the million dollar question - Will Brett Favre retire, or play in 2009?

Last week, Favre made comments to the media that led many to believe he won’t be back in 2009.

I have the ability to turn it off just like that,” he told ESPN’s Ed Werder and the Biloxi Sun-Herald. “I don’t feel I have anything else to prove. It’s hard for me, but I have to say I gave out down the stretch (in 2008). I think it would just be better for me to just thank the Jets, and I sincerely mean that. It was well worth what I invested. But I’m going to just quietly step away if that’s what happens.”

Let’s not have short memories about this folks, of course Favre is supposed to sound like he doesn’t want to play next season. It’s only mid-January and he’s reeling emotionally from not making the playoffs. Use your brains folks. The same thing happened last season, when Favre retired. Then, of course, when NFL teams started throwing the practice uniforms on in June and July, the veteran came sniffing around again and forced his way back in.

Could history repeat itself? Could Favre retire again this February, and then come back again this July? Abso-freaking-lutely, folks. And for that reason, we’re definitely not going to believe a damn word he says until next August. When next season comes around and Favre isn’t in training camp somewhere, then we’ll believe he doesn’t want to play.

But whatever happens in the next two months mean absolutely nothing in terms of whether or not we’ll see number 4 again. Remember, if he somehow ends up in Minnesota, the Jets owe Green Bay a first round pick. You can bet whoever the new coach of the Jets is wants to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Our gut feeling is that it’ll be another crazy off-season for Favre, especially when NYJ names their new man, but in the end, he’ll be back for another season in 2009.
