Just What The Doctor Ordered?

Just What The Doctor Ordered? The 7-6 Washington Redskins have lost two in a row and four of their last five games. In other words, things are pretty much in complete disarray. RB Clinton Portis has battled through about four or five nagging injuries, and QB Jason Campbell hasn’t thrown for more than 232 yards in each of his last five games. However, the answer to the ‘Skins offensive woes could be right under their nose.

We’re hearing that what the Redskins’ offense really needs is a big, strong, fast, playmaking WR to step in and contribute. Nothing against Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El, but they just aren’t cutting the mustard. The good news is that Washington already has that man on their roster. The 34th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, 6′2″, 218 lb. pass catcher from MIchigan State - Devin Thomas - hasn’t played a lot this season, but is ready to take on a larger role. Thomas, a bigger version of Carolina’s Steve Smith, has three catches in three of his last six games, in extremely limited playing time. He’s also shown his breakaway speed on a 29 yard end around that he took to the house against the Giants in Week 13.

What does this mean for his fantasy value? Well, over the next three weeks, we’ll be able to really tell how head coach Jim Zorn plans to use him - and potentially even fellow rookie second rounder Malcolm Kelly - next season. With Washington likely to be mathematically eliminated from the NFC playoff race soon, chances are Thomas could see some serious playing time during Weeks 16 & 17. If this is the case, and if he takes advantage of his snaps, expect Thomas to be a breakout candidate in 2009.

Dynasty owners should treat him as someone with high po, and if he’s not currently on your roster, you should definitely think about adding him before his value jumps.

We’ll have more on Thomas, and other 2009 potential breakout candidates throughout the end of the NFL season, and the entire off-season.
