Dynasty Alert: “The Other” Steve Smith

Dynasty Alert: The Other Steve Smith What type of league do you play in? Is it a typical seasonal league, run through a cookie cutter league hosting site like ESPN.com or Yahoo! If so, that’s fine, but you’re missing out. Here at No-Offseason.com, we’ll help you win your fantasy football league regardless of your format. However, we love to emphasize dynasty fantasy football prospects.

One guy we absolutely love, is starting to be known simply as “The Other.” His real name is Steve Smith, but due to the Carolina Panthers’ superstar with the same name, we have to come up with a way to distinguish the two players. While Carolina’s veteran is a smallish big play threat, capable of taking it to the house at any time, the Giants pass catcher of similar stature is more of a reception hogging slot option. It’s very clear that the 23 year old - in his second year from USC - has completely taken over the role that TE Jeremy Shockey used to occupy - that of Eli Manning’s check down possession option. While flanker Plaxico Burress is the team’s top WR, and big play option, it appears that Smith is the team’s second option in the passing game, even though Amani Toomer is the split end. This type of set up has become more and more common in the NFL with the emergence of the spread offense - case it point - Wes Welker’s 112 catch, 1,175 yard, eight TD season last year in New England.

We’re not saying that “The Other” will put up those type of digits anytime soon, but we are saying that he’s starting to play that type of roll for the defending Super Bowl champs, and play it very well. He has hauled in seven or more catches in two games this season, and looks to be on the verge of being a guy that will haul in five catches minimum each game.

Going back to our question at the top of this piece - “what type of fantasy football league do you play in? - it’s imperative that you check and see if your league awards points for receptions. Why? While Smith has made TE Kevin Boss basically irrelevant, he still won’t score many TDs, and may not have many games with more than 75 yards - this season at least.

He is a versatile WR though, and has a very high ceiling. We wouldn’t be surprised if his role continues to increase as the 34 year old Toomer slows down and nears retirement. While 6′3″ Domenik Hixon is also a prospect to watch, Smith is the one to own, especially in PPR leagues.

The Best Name Ever

We’d be stupid not to mention right now, this minute, how we really feel about the New England Patriots new starting RB, BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The rookie from Ole Miss is 5′11″, 225 lbs. - the same size as guys like Marion Barber and Marshawn Lynch. This guy looked very good against Denver on Monday night, racking up 63 yards and a TD after Sammy Morris left with a knee injury. Morris is out 2-4 weeks, and so is LaMont Jordan. With Laurence Maroney on injured reserve and Kevin Faulk expected to continue to play his third down role, look for “BGE” to showcase his skills against the Rams, Colts, Bills and Jets. Like Ryan Grant and Earnest Graham did a year ago at this time, “BGE” or “The Hyphen” as we like to call him, has a serious chance to entrench himself as a valued commodity moving forward. We recommend all dynasty owners go grab him immediately if he’s still available.
