Experts Draft: Galloway Still Has Value?

After a short hiatus from analyzing the most recent expert draft I participated in , it’s time to get right back to it. There are many interesting issues to discuss, namely 37 year old (soon-to-be, anyway) Joey Galloway being taken at the beginning of the round, with names like Donald Driver, Anthony Gonzalez, Jerricho Cotchery and Vincent Jackson still on the board.
7.01 - 73rd overall - The Huddle - Joey Galloway, Buccaneers WR - I understand three straight seasons of 1,000 yards is impressive, but Galloway’s totals have steadily declined since his unbelievable breakout season of 2005. He only caught 57 balls last season, and showed more inconsistency than ever, posting three games with only one catch. Galloway, who will be 37 when we all sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, will be a centerpiece of the Bucs offense at the start of the season, but his production will dwindle as the season goes on. In other words, don’t count on him for 16 games.
7.02 - 74th overall - FFIndepth.com - DeAngelo Williams, Panthers RB - Unlike most sites, we have not counted out DeAngelo Williams from the fantasy picture at all - especially in points per reception leagues. Many fantasy outlets believe he’ll be the clear cut back-up to Jonathan Stewart, but we believe he’ll actually be Carolina’s primary back for most of the year. He may be short, but he runs with power, and anyone who says otherwise hasn’t actually seen him play. Williams improved his pass protection greatly in 2007, and finished the year very strong. There’s no reason to believe he won’t at least get fifty percent of the touches in the Panthers’ run-heavy attack. He’s a playmaker - flat out.
7.03 - 75th overall - FantasyPlaymakers.com - Javon Walker, Raiders WR - This draft was held prior to Walker’s recent incident, meaning he definitely wouldn’t have gone this early. Although it appears he’s now back with the Raiders getting ready for 2008, we still do not have much faith in him entering the season. Take him at your own risk - but not before round 13 of standard seasonal drafts.
7.04 - 76th overall - CBSSports.com - Derek Anderson, Browns QB - Many owners will over-value Anderson heading into 2008, but the fact of the matter is that this is the right time to take him. Don’t get overzealous and jump at him in round five - he’s had one good season, but isn’t yet a proven fantasy commodity.
7.05 - 77th overall - FantasyGuru.com - Chris Cooley, Redskins TE - Cooley is coming off a solid fantasy season, but his role may diminish a tad in new head coach Jim Zorn’s offense. Okay, not that his role will diminish, but it will definitely take a while to come to fruition. Zorn used the TE in Seattle, but word is that he wants to use four and five WRs in Washington, meaning Cooley will have to prove himself all over again. Expectations should be tempered. We like Owen Daniels and Todd Heap a little better in 2008, and that will be reflected in our next player rankings update .
7.06 - 78th overall - Rotoworld.com - Vernon Davis, Niners TE - We’ve absolutely loved Davis for the past two seasons. He has an incredible amount of upside, as he’s a receiver/linebacker trapped in a tight end’s body - if that makes any sense at all. Basically, he’s a freaking Under Amour commercial. The problem is - and it’s potentially a big one - that new OC Mike Martz does not use the tight end in his offense. One of two things will happen to Davis this season. He’ll either prove that he can run crisp routes, and catch 65 balls - becoming the first TE ever to make an impact under Martz - or he’ll never get off the pine…and I mean never. You make the call, but we think he’s too big of a risk.
7.07 - 79th overall - No-Offseason.com - Donald Driver, Packers WR - I know, I know, you’re really concerned with the fact that Brett Favre has retired. Or is that Driver only caught two TDs last season? Either way, these things don’t concern me at all. The 33 year old can still flat out play, and is in the best shape of his life. He has weapons around him like Greg Jennings, Ryan Grant, Donald Lee, Jordy Nelson and James Jones to keep defenses honest, and even though Aaron Rodgers may have some growing pains, he has one of the best offensive lines in the game to protect him. We think Driver will have a bounce back year in the TD column, and reach 80+ catches and 1,000+ yards for the fifth straight season.
7.08 - 80th overall - Athlon Sports - Laveranues Coles, Jets WR - Coles will be one of the most overlooked fantasy WRs in 2008. At age 30, Coles is still the centerpiece of the Jets’ passing attack, and is coming off a season in which he would have lit up the stat column if not for a season-ending ankle injury. He’s now fully healthy though, and should benefit from an improved Jets offensive line and overall attack. Look for Coles to be an incredible value in drafts this summer.
7.09 - 81st overall - USA Today - Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks QB - Yet another example of why not to take a QB in rounds one, two or three, Matt Hasselbeck continues to play at a high level, and is capable of putting up huge fantasy digits, namely because of the fact that head coach Mike Holmgren is willing to abandon the run at any time and give Hass the green light to chuck it downfield. Now, many owners will be weary of Hasselbeck’s WR situation this season, but it honestly hasn’t ever mattered who is out there with him - he finds a way to get it done.
7.10- 82nd overall - Fanball.com - Jerricho Cotchery, Jets WR - Maybe it’s because he only had two TDs, but Cotchery’s 82 catch, 1,130 yard season last year went virtually unnoticed by fantasy owners. The kid is only 26 years old, and he’s hauled in 82 balls in each of the last two seasons. Expect more and more good things from this value pick in all formats.
7.11 - 83rd overall - FantasyFootballTrader.com - Owen Daniels, Texans TE - In points per reception leagues like this one, Daniels is a phenomenal value option. We expect the Texans’ offense to take a huge step forward in 2008, as QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson are expected to regain full health, at the offensive line is much improved under new line coach Alex Gibbs. Daniels will be a key possession option for Schaub (or Sage Rosenfels) throughout all of 2008.
7.12 - 84th overall - ProFootballWeekly.com - Bernard Berrian, Vikings WR - Berrian signed a huge deal this off-season to move to the other side of the NFC North division, and many believe he’ll be one of several reasons why the Vikes will make a run at the Super Bowl. Berrian stretches the field like no other, and makes acrobatic downfield catches - just what young signal caller Tarvaris Jackson needs - someone he can lean on to make him look good. If Jackson can get it into the vicinity, Berrian will haul it in, and with Sidney Rice and Adrian Peterson occupying defenses, the potential is there for some big numbers. He’ll be more valuable in non-PPR formats though, due to a high yards per catch average.
