Fantasy Impact: Antonio Pittman

Fantasy Impact: Antonio Pittman Remember Ohio State’s run to the National Championship game against Florida just two years ago? Plenty of offensive players from that squad, including Ravens QB Troy Smith, Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez and Dolphins WR Ted Ginn, find themselves as potential impact players for NFL teams right now. The Buckeyes’ tailback at the time, Antonio Pittman, had a less direct route to following in his teammates’ footsteps, but now finds himself knocking  on the door of doing the same.

The 5′11″, 207 pound halfback was drafted in the late rounds of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, after many thought he had first or second round talent. On a team that already had Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush, it didn’t look like Pittman would have a shot at being an NFL starter early in his career - especially after he was beat out by fellow Big Ten RB, undrafted free agent Pierre Thomas from Illinois.

However, Pittman landed on his feet last season in St. Louis, and has now become Steven Jackson’s primary back-up, after rushing for 139 yards on 38 attempts in 11 games last season. Well, at this point in time, we all know that SJax’s back-up is St. Louis’ starting tailback.

With the Rams’ star holding out, the former OSU star has looked dynamite, rushing six times for 21 yards and a TD in preseason Week 1, and following it up with a nine-carry, 67 yard performance in preseason Week 2. So, the question now becomes - what kind of fantasy value does Pittman have?

The question can best be answered this way - given the amount of virtually unknown RBs that had an impact last season, like Ryan Grant, Earnest Graham and Justin Fargas, the possibility for Pittman to come in and put up solid numbers during the regular season - or at least the first part of the regular season - is pretty huge.

Will Jackson sign at some point and report to Rams practice? Yes. But will the door still be open for Pittman to make an impact - you bet.

So - treat Pittman like you would most other clear cut back-up RBs. Treat him like someone you need to own if you’re an SJax seasonal owner.

In dynasty and deep keeper formats, consider drafting Pittman as a flier - and to piss off the guy in your league that owns Jackson. You’ll likely be able to swing a trade later.

Another player that should be looked upon as the next unknown who could potentially make an impact is Houston’s Chris Taylor - more to come on him later this week.
