As fantasy owners get ready for Week 1, there are several question marks surrounding the tight end position. Antonio Gates hasn’t played since last January, and owners are wondering if Jason Witten can repeat his 2007 season. And, who will boom and bust?
Fantasy owners want to know…
Question - What’s the deal with Antonio Gates?
Answer - Look, unless you have a guy like Vernon Davis as your back-up, chances are you’ll be taking a gamble and starting Gates this week. That’s fine, a 50% Gates is better than a 100% Anthony Fasano. However, don’t expect much from the superstar, who is still recovering from toe surgery. While he’s likely to play, there is a chance he’ll be inactive, so make sure if you own him that you are carrying two TEs on game day. The only way you’re benching him is if he’s a last minute scratch. We’ll keep you updated.
Question - Who will boom?
Answer - Captain obvious says Kellen Winslow and Jason Witten - as the two square off with one another. Jeremy Shockey should get off to a great start, as should Dallas Clark, Vernon Davis and Owen Daniels.
Question - Who will bust?
Answer - Too many folks are too high on L.J. Smith this year - we don’t like him, and he’ll show you why in Week 1. Chris Cooley will get off to a rough start tonight against the G-Men as well - we don’t recommend him in your line-ups. Oh yeah, and Donald Lee in Green Bay has fallen off the face of the earth now that Aaron Rodgers has the rock. Don’t expect much from Lee.
Question - Who is the sleeper of the week at TE?
Answer - Dustin Keller and Greg Olsen are names to watch out for, but our sleeper of the week is Tony Scheffler against Oakland. Look for Jay Cutler to find him early and often with Brandon Marshall out of the line-up.
