Last week, we learned a lot about what could happen in fantasy football in 2009, but in this weekend’s divisional games, even more of a picture was painted. Check out what this past weekend’s performances meant to the big picture of fantasy.
Willie Parker can still play…Last week, we wrote the same thing about 30 year old Edgerrin James, and following a 20 carry, 57 yard, one TD game against the Carolina Panthers, it looks like he’ll be carrying some serious momentum into the off-season. But so will Parker, who rushed for 146 yards and two scores on 27 carries against the Chargers, two weeks after rushing for 116 yards and a score on 23 carries against the Browns. Crappy opponents? Maybe, but FWP’s confidence is back folks, and it’s back at the right time. Dynasty owners of the 28 year old shouldn’t sell him too low this off-season, as he still has something left in the tank. If Rashard Mendenhall can contribute in 2009, it should elongate Parker’s career and allow him to keep his all important burst.
Justin Gage has potential…Don’t get too excited dynasty owners, but someone to watch in 2009 seasonal re-draft leagues - and deep dynasty leagues - is Titans 6′4″ WR Justin Gage. The soon-to-be 28 year old played very well when healthy during the 2008 regular season, with five TDs in his last seven games, and averaged three catches for 60 yards a game despite finishing with less than desirable overall totals. Even more impressive though, was the fact that Gage stepped up in the playoffs against the Ravens defense and was Kerry Collins’ number one target, hauling in 10 passes for 135 yards. Granted, Tennessee was in come-from-behind mode, and was without Chris Johnson, but the fact that Gage stepped up should officially put him on the fantasy radar.
Joe Flacco is special…Say what you will about the fact that he has a phenomenal defense and run game - who does Joe Flacco remind us of? Very much like Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers folks. Although he hasn’t exactly lit up the stat column in his rookie season, he has a ton of confidence, a great arm, solid receivers (yes, Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton have played well enough in 2008 for us to believe they’ll be solid again in 2009) and a visionary offensive coordinator in Cam Cameron. All of these things should add up to Flacco not only being a special QB in the NFL for years to come, but also someone that should post very solid fantasy statistics along the way.
Stewart Bradley will be an IDP stud in 2009…From what we’ve heard out of the Eagles organization recently, third year MLB Steward Bradley is not only considered the new leader of the Eagles defense (sorry BDawk), but he’s also someone who should be posting solid tackle digits in 2009 and beyond. The 25 year old from Nebraska racked up 108 tackles (86 solo) in 2008, and has 17 (11 solo) in two games this post season. IDP owners looking for a sleeper MLB in a tackle heavy league should keep Bradley on their radar in 2009.
Larry Fitzgerald may be worth a top five overall seasonal pick in 2009… Not only did he have a sick regular season, with 96 catches for 1,434 yards and 12 TDs in 2008, but Cardinals 25 year old WR Larry Fitzgerald has 14 catches for 267 yards and two TDs in two games during the NFL Playoffs. If you’ve watched this guy play over his last four games, you’ll realize just how sick he is. The catches the former Minnesota Vikings ball boy makes are absolutely ridiculous, and while his recently inflated stats could have something to do with the health of Anquan Boldin, it’s more likely that Fitz will simply be one of fantasy football’s best players for several years to come. Dynasty owners must hold onto him regardless of circumstance, and seasonal owners should consider him a sure-fire first rounder in 2009 - potentially even a top five overall selection.
