In a move that may not have really caught your attention, 39 year old Jeff Garcia signed a deal to become the Raiders back-up quarterback, behind third year man JaMarcus Russell. While this move may not seem initially like it has much of a fantasy impact, there is much we can learn from it.
First of all, Russell’s job is not safe with Garcia in town. As much as the veteran says he understands his role as a back-up, make no mistake - he wants to play, and he will fight for playing time. Not only does Russell not have many weapons in the passing game, but now there’s also a reason to pull him when times get tough.
But mostly, what we learn is just how much head coach Tom Cable will rely on the running game in 2009. The Raiders offense truly will revolve around Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and even Justin Fargas. Expect Oakland to play a smash mouth brand of football and be very conservative in the passing game. They could end up being an extreme situation where the only member of their passing game that will be fantasy worthy will be tight end Zach Miller. As for McFadden and Bush though, we really consider them one of the best sleeper 1-2 RB combos of the year.
