It sounds simple, but it is extremely important that fantasy owners keep in mind their league’s scoring format when setting their line-ups. The value of various players differs drastically from league to league, as some formats award points only for touchdowns, while others go as far as to award fantasy points for receptions and even special teams return yardage.Take Houston’s Andre Johnson, for example. At first glance, the guy is having an absolutely amazing season, leading the league in receptions with 56 and receiving yardage with 772, after hauling in 41 passes for 593 yards in his last four games. However, in TD-only leagues, Johnson ranks tied for 35th among wide receivers, with only two TDs. His own teammate, Kevin Walter, ranks tied for second among WRs with five scores.
Another solid example is Bengals WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. In leagues that do not award points for receptions, Housh is having a below average season, with 512 receiving yards and three TDs through eight games. However, tack on his 54 catches – good for second in the league behind Johnson – and Housh is a top 10 WR in points per reception leagues.
It’s not just wide receivers that are affected by this. Through Week 7, Tennessee’s LenDale White had a league leading eight rushing TDs (scoring in all but one game), while rushing for a 314 yard total that put him 31st among RBs, and only catching two passes for seven additional all-purpose yards. That makes White a must-start, top three overall player in TD-only formats, while ranking him as low end RB3 in leagues that award points for receptions and yardage.
