Last RB Standing

Last RB Standing Move over Manning, there’s a new Peyton in town. The Denver Broncos just can’t take it anymore. Early in Week 10, Michael Pittman and Andre Hall went on injured reserve. With Selvin Young and Ryan Torain the only semi-healthy RBs in the Broncos’ stable, each looked to have a rise in fantasy value - especially Torain - until he tore his ACL against the Browns.

With Young’s status still up in the air for Week 11 and beyond, and Torain headed to injured reserve, the last RB standing in Denver is a rookie FB named Peyton Hillis. The youngster from Arkansas is a solid pass catcher out of the backfield, as evidenced by his seven catch, 116 yard, one TD performance in Week 9.

So, what happens now? Well, Torain’s dynasty value takes a hit, along with his seasonal value completely being flushed down the toilet, and the Broncos scramble to figure out what to do at RB. For the moment, Hillis appears to be the starter, as he finished the team’s Week 10 win at Cleveland, rushing eight times for 24 yards.

Guys like P.J. Pope and Cory Boyd, who were recently activated from Denver’s practice squad, become names to watch, but our money is on Hillis finishing out the season. Remember, it’s only been four years since a former fullback filled in and rushed for 1,000 yards for Denver (Reuben Droughns in 2004). Not that Hillis will be a huge fantasy option, but he’s worth snagging in deep leagues.

It’s also likely that Mike Shanahan says “screw it” and just abandons the run completely and let’s Jay Cutler toss the rock for 500 yards a game the rest of the way. So, believe it or not, this is one of the rare cases when RB trouble could equal HUGE digits for Denver’s WRs - especially rookie Eddie Royal, who caught six balls for 164 yards and a 93 yard TD pass in Week 10.

Long term, Young could come back and make an impact for the team’s final few games of 2008 - and they better hope he does if they want to make a run at or in the playoffs. Going into 2009 though, expect the Broncos to add some more veteran depth, like Edgerrin James or Larry Johnson, as one or both could be released by their current squads at the end of January.
