Up until yesterday, there was an alarming reason for fantasy owners to be extremely weary of freak-of-nature tight end Vernon Davis. The third year prospect now plays in soon-to-be one of the league’s most prolific passing offenses, and he’s much more of a wide receiver than a tight end - every fantasy owner’s dream. So what’s the problem?
Easy. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz has rarely ever actually used a tight end in his offense. Four WRs? Absolutely. Five? Yep. A tight end? Once in a blue moon.
So, the question on the minds of fantasy owners since February has been - “how will Martz use Vernon Davis?”
The yesterday, we finally got a glimpse of an answer. Martz acknowledged to the media that Davis was definitely more of a wide receiver than a tight end, and that he didn’t know who could run with him and beat him down field in a foot race.
Now, from what I can tell, this is Martz code for - “he runs great routes, expect him to break the mold.” If so, we could have a fantasy super duper star on our hands, as the 6′3″, 253 pound monster is definitely capable of lining up in the slot and being a solid possession receiver and red zone target. Now, during the past two seasons in Detroit, Martz has highlighted little quick guys like Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald, so it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of a guy like Arnaz Battle being a reception hog, however, if Davis can prove that he runs crisp routes, be careful not to miss the monster right under your nose. Now, Martz did also jock Delanie Walker pretty hard as well - saying he’s installed plays just for him - so proceed with caution for now, but anticipate upside for Davis.
This guy is the perfect example of a boom or bust fantasy player in 2008, but after Martz’s recent comments, he’s definitely looking more like a boom. The more we learn about this situation, the more we’ll move him up or down in our rankings accordingly. Check back often for updates on Davis and other 2008 breakout fantasy possibilities.
