How Good Is Tavares Gooden?

tavares-gooden.jpgWe’re almost done with round three of our NFL Mock Draft, and there are still plenty of fine prospects being selected. Among today’s picks are solid value guys like Arkansas State’s Tyrell Johnson, Maryland’s Dre Moore, UCLA’s Bruce Davis and Notre Dame’s John Carlson, but none are as highly touted as hard-hitting Miami OLB Tavares Gooden.

89. “The Jacksonville Jaguars Select…” John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame -Carlson is rated by some scouts as the second best TE in this draft. We have him as our fourth best prospect at the position, but the kid can absolutely play. He was the only bright spot in a horrific Notre Dame offense this past year, and has Todd Heap-like skills. The Jags like Marcedes Lewis, but wouldn’t be able to pass on adding a weapon like Carlson this late in the draft.

90. “The Chicago Bears Select…” Dre Moore, DT, Maryland -The Bears have gone from a defensive powerhouse to a borderline colander in the matter of one calendar year. It’s cliche, but it all starts up front, with the defensive line. Maryland’s Moore would be an unbelievable value this late, and help the Bears rebuild their front seven.

91. “The Green Bay Packers Select…” Tyrell Johnson, S, Arkansas State - Overlooked due to his previous home at a very small school, Johnson’s draft stock is rising big time right now. He’s rated by many as the second best safety in the draft behind Miami’s Kenny Phillips, and by some as the best safety in the draft. We’ll be surprised if he actually falls this far, but Green Bay definitely needs some depth in the secondary and would gladly snag him here.

92. “The Indianapolis Colts Select…” Tavares Gooden, OLB, Miami -The ability to snag a solid value like Gooden is what makes the Colts a winning organization. Like many of today’s mock picks, he could go a lot higher than this, but is completely unlikely to fall past this point. If given a chance to play for an NFL team in 2008, the speedy fast, hard-hitting Gooden would be a phenomenal IDP prospect.

93. “The New England Patriots Select…” Bruce Davis, OLB, UCLA - The Patriots are now officially upset that they didn’t go after Gooden earlier in our mock. Davis is our next highest rated outside linebacker, and the Pats need youth and depth at that position, so this is an extremely logical pick.
