Not Jiggy With It Anymore

Saints DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant, along with RB Deuce McAllister, and Minnesota defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams were all suspended four games by the NFL on Tuesday for using banned substances, and there may be quite a significant fantasy impact during the final four weeks of the season.
First of all, Smith had played very well over the last four games, racking up six or more tackles in three straight weeks, along with a sack. He will now be permanently replaced by Hollis Thomas, but it’s 27 year old Bobby McCray, who has played very well in the last two weeks filling in for the injured Grant, who will benefit most from Smith and Grant’s suspension. First of all, he figures to be the Saints’ top pass rusher for the remainder of 2008. Secondly, with Grant on injured reserve, McCray should start the first four games of 2009 opposite Smith, due to the fact that Grant’s suspension can’t begin until next season. Look for the 6′6″ McCray, who has nine tackles and three sacks in his last three games, to be a solid sleeper DE2 option.
Perhaps an even bigger fantasy impact will occur in Minnesota, but not for the Vikings, rather, for their opponents. Now, Kevin Smith, Tim Hightower, Michael Turner and Brandon Jacobs will face Ellis Wyms and Fred Evans instead of two pro bowl defensive tackles. The Williams boys’ departure for the remainder of the regular season will absolutely open up running lanes and be detrimental to the entire Vikings defense.
No longer is the Vikings second ranked run defense really that potent.
The only offensive player forced to deal with the brunt of the water pill debacle is Saints veteran RB Deuce McAllister. Not only is the 29 year old’s season over - opening up a HUGE role for second year man Pierre Thomas, who has rushed for 85 or more yards and a TD in two of his last three games - but his career with the Saints could be as well. If New Orleans finally lets him go, there are very few places that would be likely to show interest. I suppose Denver could be one of them in 2009, along with Tampa Bay, and possibly even St. Louis as a back up to Steven Jackson. Regardless, it looks like Deuce’s dynasty value is shot, and Thomas has some high potential, as Sean Payton really wants him to play a large role along with fellow tailback Reggie Bush.
