We’ve participated in many interesting expert fantasy football drafts this summer - including mocks and league drafts - and our most recent draft was no exception, as Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne was selected in the first round.
1. Sports Outlaw - LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers RB - He seems to be winning the battle over Adrian Peterson in most drafts we’ve seen, however, we still firmly believe that AP is the better choice here, as Tomlinson has already hit his statistical peak, and can only go down from there.
2. The Huddle - Brian Westbrook, Eagles RB - Dare we say it? Westy could end up being the bust of 2008. Seriously, he’s going way too high in these drafts. AP should have been the pick here. The Eagles will spread the ball around more in 2008, and Westy won’t sniff 90 catches - mark my words.
3. Monster Draft - Adrian Peterson, Vikings RB - Monster Draft got a steal here. They got the third draft position, but the best overall player. We’ve tried to pound this into our readers’ heads this summer - regardless of league format, AP is the man.
4. FantasyFootballXtreme - Steven Jackson, Rams RB - The holdout will be settled soon, we’re not worried about him, and he should provide great overall value at number four overall. I recently saw him slide to ninth in the first round - don’t let that happen in your league.
5. FFIndepth - Joseph Addai, Colts RB - In my mind, Addai is the number two overall pick behind Peterson. He’ll stay healthy for a full season, and get his largest workload ever, resulting in phenomenal numbers for this third year stud.
6. The Whiz - Tom Brady, Patriots QB - I feel like I’ve said this a million times, but unless your league starts two QBs or awards as many points for passing TDs as they do for rushing and receiving scores, you have no business drafting Brady or any other QB in round one - or round two for that matter.
7. PigSkinSanity - Randy Moss, Patriots WR - Moss is a great pick here. He’s a top tier fantasy producer, and in a league like this that starts three WRs - a hot commodity. Find out when to pick WRs this early.
8. JunkYard Jake - Marshawn Lynch, Bills RB - Good pick by JunkYard Jake here, as Lynch was the man we were hoping to get. Have you heard one negative thing about Lynch this whole off-season? He reminds us of Steven Jackson heading into 2006. Lynch is a big, punishing back who will be the centerpiece of his team’s offense and probably never leave the field. His reception total should easily triple from last season, and we expect double digit TDs as well.
9. NoOffseason.com - Frank Gore, 49ers RB - We were happy to get Gore, and it was a tough decision to pass on Dallas’ Marion Barber - who fell farther in this draft than in many others we’ve participated in this year. We ultimately chose Gore over Barber due to the news that he’s slimmed down to 214 pounds, and will likely have a shot at 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in Mike Martz’s offense.
10. Coachbox - Marion Barber, Cowboys RB - No doubt Barber is the man in Dallas, and should easily see double digit TDs in that explosive offense. No major concerns in our eyes here - he’s a legit RB1.
11. Fantasy Football Trader - Reggie Wayne, Colts WR - With Clinton Portis the logical selection here, “Trader” when an interesting route, taking Indy’s Reggie Wayne. While we do agree that Wayne is probably the second best seasonal WR behind Moss, “Trader” probably could have waited until round two to snag him.
12. Fantasy Football Golden Boy - Larry Johnson, Chiefs RB - Okay, here’s a guy who we keep going back and forth on. At some point, we have to take a stance though, so here goes. Many fantasy expert colleagues of mine are incredibly down on LJ this year, saying he’s done and he’s a huge bust. I disagree. I think he’s a low end RB1 for one more season, then he’s done. For seasonal owners, he’s a great pick here. For dynasty and deep keeper guys, I’d make sure you have a plethora of young RBs on the bench if you’re going to carry him into 2008.
