Rodgers vs. Cutler

Rodgers vs. CutlerThere’s a very interesting debate brewing on our forums, regarding who the best dynasty option is at quarterback between a pair of 25 year olds - Denver’s Jay Cutler and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers. According to our 2009 Dynasty QB Rankings, Cutler is the man to own, but as you’ll read - there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Both QBs absolutely blossomed as phenomenal fantasy options in 2009, Cutler tossing for more than 4,500 yards and 25 TDs and rushing for two, and Rodgers tossing for more than 4,000 yards, 28 TDs and rushing for four.

Each are currently confident cornerstones of pass-happy franchises with a ton of talent at wide receiver, but obviously one has a little more job security than the other. We’re hearing Cutler could be traded soon, with the Jets and Buccaneers front runners, and teams like the Redskins and Lions also extremely interested in his services. While we believe he’s clearly good enough to remain a solid fantasy starter regardless of where he ends up, we also feel strongly that his best situation for fantasy success is in Denver.

Think about it, if he’s traded to the Jets, the quality of his wide receiving corps goes down huge. Sorry Jerricho Cotchery owners. If he’s traded to the Lions, the quality of his pass protection goes down huge - but he will have Calvin Johnson to throw it up to, which would be nice - but still, no Eddie Royal, no Tony Scheffler, Jabar Gaffney or Brandon Stokley. The Redskins and Bucs are both pretty darn talented, there’s no question about that, but each run west coast offenses. I know, football is football, but there would still be a learning curve, and his numbers could suffer initially.

Let me make this clear - if Cutler is traded, he’s still a solid fantasy starter, and likely a top five overall dynasty signal caller. However, Rodgers is likely to leapfrog him if he’s not in Denver anymore.

In reality, these guys are both solid number producers, and even though Cutler is currently ranked higher, the perception should be that Rodgers’ ceiling is just as high.

So, if you’re forced to choose between these two guys in a trade situation, we recommend going after Rodgers, as you’ll likely be asked to pay less for him, and you’ll get the same - if not more - production, and much less drama over the coming months. If you own Cutler, hang tight and hope he stays in Denver - but obviously, don’t panic if he’s traded.
