Woah Boy - Roy Boy!

Woah Boy - Roy Boy!With Terrell Owens’ departure to Buffalo, Roy Williams has been handed the number one WR job in Dallas. After Jerry Jones paid big for Williams last year in hopes that Williams would help Dallas get over the hump, it is not surprising that Roy is being given a chance to succeed in Dallas. I have to admit, as a Roy Williams owner, I am excited too see him being drafted so high in mock drafts and in fantasy football magazines. But to our readers out there, don’t make the mistake of drafting Roy too high.

In 10 team drafts Roy Williams has been in the top 16 WRs taken, ahead of Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Chad Johnson, DeSean Jackson, and Eddie Royal in some cases.  You can make a case, depending on your format, that any of those guys should be taken before Roy Boy.  Like I said, I think that WIlliams will have a bounce back year, but he will be a strong WR3 and borderline WR2, and here’s why:

Jason Witten: The love affair between Tony Romo and Jason is well publicized, and even TO felt jealous of Witten for stealing his man. While Witten may not literally be the #1 option for Romo, subjectively Romo’s confidence and trust in Witten means Witten will see #1 WR-like targets. The last two years WItten has gone for more than 950 yards and 80 receptions, while TO went for 69 receptions, 1,000 yards and 10 TDs last year.  The receptions were low for TO, but nonetheless show that he was barely the #1 while he was there.

TO Can Make a Play…but can Roy?: Let’s face it, Roy Williams is not TO.  Roy is not as fast, not as lanky, and not as demanding for the ball.  All those things mean less receptions and less TDs for Williams.  Roy has had trouble getting separation from defenders, and has been plagued by injuries.  I do think he has made it a point to be ready for this year, but he just isn’t as gifted as TO.

Patrick Crayton: Don’t overlook Patrick Crayton or Miles Austin this year.  Because of the politics and price paid for Roy, they won’t be the “#1 WR,” but they will see their share of targets. With teams focusing on Williams and Witten, Crayton should have a nice year and be a great option for Romo.

Romo: This could be an article itself, but I’m just not a Tony Romo fan and I think he’ll struggle this year. The pressure is on him to succeed and prove that he’s a leader. We’ve already heard that coaches have been telling him to get in to better shape, and we know his focus has been questioned. I just don’t get the feeling that Romo is a winner and wants to win championships. He’s blessed with this opportunity, wants to enjoy it, make his money, and get on with life. Life for Tony Romo, does not begin and end with football. As a result, I think he’ll struggle and so will Roy. His completion percentage has fallen year after year, and so has his yards per catch. The Tony Romo of 2007 won’t ever be back, and 2009 will be a washed down version of 2008.

So, where should you draft a guy like Williams?  Probably as the 20-23 WR in your draft. Look, he’s a legit WR3 and sometimes a WR2. That means in a 10 team league, he should be taken around 20-23. If he’s gone by then, no worries, let someone else deal with the headache.
