Scott Pioli: America’s Most Wanted

Scott Pioli: Americas Most Wanted The NFL regular season has been over for around 10 days now, but the content here at No-Offseason.com only gets better. There is no off season in the NFL, or in fantasy football, and as the NFL’s hot stove heats up, we’ve got all the bases covered with our daily blogs and updated rankings.

I’m not afraid to admit that I was only 13 years old at the time of the Major League Baseball work stoppage of 1994. I used to get up every day in the spring and summer, read all of the box scores while I ate my cereal and watched SportsCenter. What does this have to do with Scott Pioli? Keep reading. Basically, I remember being disappointed as hell that MLB didn’t have games in August and September that year, but I remember what got me through it. Mitch Albom - now a nationally known author - was just a measly columnist for the Detroit Free Press at the time (I grew up in Rochester, Michigan, just outside of Detroit), and he used to “make up” the games. He’d come up with fake fantasy games, with fake fantasy MLB box scores. This was cool to me because it still gave me something to follow, and in Albom’s weird way, it would always come together at the end of every story, or “fake game.”

Well, I’d like to take a page out of Albom’s book and let you in on what the Detroit Lions should do this off-season. Basically, there is a way for them to turn their franchise around. All they need to do is somehow find a way to bring in Scott Pioli - the NFL’s most wanted man - and give the fans a real reason to get excited about the team. Picture this…

January 8, 2009 - In a historic move today, Detroit Lions co-owner William Clay Ford decided to bring on board Scott Pioli, former Vice President of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots, stealing him away from the Jets, Chiefs, Browns, Broncos and others around the NFL. But, how did the owner of the worst franchise in professional sports, one that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1957, and that went 0-16 last season, get Pioli to agree to come to Detroit?

He gave him the franchise, literally.

“We finally realized that we didn’t know what the hell we were doing,” said Ford, who turns 84 in March and has owned the team since 1964. “We needed Scott, bad, and we needed to turn this thing around before our family lost ALL credibility. The only option was to make Scott 49% owner of the team.”

With Pioli - who played college ball at Central Connecticut State, before a three year college coaching stint prior to entering the NFL as a scout with the Cleveland Browns in 1992 - now on board, the master plan can now take place for the Lions. Not only is Pioli the true mastermind behind the recent Patriots dynasty, able to draft and hand pick the best college and pro talent around, but he’s also able to bring in one of his own disciples as the Lions new head coach.

Pioli, the Lions new co-owner/president and general manager, will shortly announce the hiring of former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as Detroit’s new head coach. McDaniels, 32, was a graduate assistant at Michigan State in 1999-2000 under Nick Saban, and is thrilled to be returning to Michigan.

“After leading one of the NFL’s most stellar and versatile offenses for the past three seasons, and working with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, I’m absolutely ready to turn around Detroit’s abysmal offense,” said McDaniels in a recent interview after Pioli took over in Detroit. “Now, it’s time to bring in Matt,” he added.

Which brings us to the third piece of good news for Lions fans. It is believed that Pioli and McDaniels will somehow find a way to bring in unrestricted free agent Matt Cassel to lead the Lions’ offense in 2009 and beyond. The 26 year old, 6′4″, 230 pound prototype QB threw for just less than 3,700 yards, 21 TDs and 11 interceptions, and rushed for two scores while leading New England to an 11-5 record after starter Tom Brady went down in the first quarter of the season-opener.

The Patriots could still franchise Cassel, but even if they do that, word is they may be interested in trading him, and Pioli believes he can find a way to bring him to Detroit.

“We believe that with a young nucleus of Cassel, Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith, all we need to do is put a good defense on the fiend, and we can win Super Bowls here in Detroit,” said Pioli…

Beep!

Beep!

Beep!

Then the alarm clock of Lions fans ring. Hardcore. And they realize that, just as I read Albom’s “fake baseball articles” in the mid 90’s as a young teenager, this is fake as well. And not only is it fake, but it’s virtually impossible.

However, it’s not unrealistic. It’s not unrealistic - that is - for another NFL team, such as the Chiefs, who are in need of a GM, head coach and QB - to potentially pull something like this off. Stay tuned and feel free to discuss this in our forums.
