Looking For An IDP Sleeper In 2008?

Jonathan Vilma was the man in 2005, DeMeco Ryans was it in 2006, then Patrick Willis took the crown in 2007. Each of the past three seasons a first or second year defender has taken the title of top IDP. This season, we believe Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton has a chance to follow in their footsteps.
You all know by now that I like to make bold predictions when it comes to fantasy football. Well, I’m not exactly going to do that this time, but I will say that Oklahoma LB Curtis Lofton, who the Atlanta Falcons happily swooped up in round two of the 2008 NFL Draft, has a chance to become a serious IDP force in 2008. At 6′0″, he’s not the freak of nature athlete that Willis is, but he has the determination of Ryans, and the speed of Vilma - pre-knee injury of course.
Lofton is a classic middle linebacker, who locates the ball and tackles well. As MLB Keith Brooking ages and deteriorates before our eyes, it’s obvious that Mike Smith, who turned Mike Peterson into a top MLB while in Jacksonville, wants to groom Lofton to take over that spot one day. Until that one day happens, Lofton is expected to earn the starting WLB role left behind by Demorrio Williams, who signed with the Chiefs. Consider Lofton a solid seasonal IDP sleeper, with exponential dynasty value. At age 32, Brooking is slow, and by the time Lofton earns he starting MLB gig, the Falcons front four will be much improved.
Smart IDP owners will let Lofton slide to the final rounds, before adding him to their roster. When all is said and done, he may be the best kept fantasy secret in 2008.
