Just a few days after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys, 35 year old WR Terrell Owens signed a one year, $6.5 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. Believe it or not, this is probably one of the best case scenarios we could have dreamed up for this fantasy value.
I don’t care who is drinking the hater-ade on this one, Owens’ fantasy owners should be happy with this move. The freak of nature athlete can still flat out play, and while a small market team like the Bills didn’t seem like a logical fit a few days ago, they were actually in need of a player exactly like number 81. Lee Evans - though a solid threat - is not a legit number one NFL WR. T.O. will step in and be the centerpiece of an up-and-coming team who showed a lot of promise early on in 2008, before Trent Edwards got hurt.
We all know, “the first year of T.O.” is usually a successful one, at that’s all Ralph Wilson and Marv Levy have signed up for here. While some antics are to be expected, we actually think he’ll out produce his 69 catch, 1,052 yard, 10 TD season from a year ago. Consider him a very solid seasonal WR2, and a great WR3 in dynasty leagues.
His presence may take some opportunities away from Evans, but it will also take defenders off of him, while opening up huge running lanes for Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. The dynasty value of James Hardy and Steve Johnson goes down, as both second year WRs will get considerably less opportunities now.
With Owens and Evans to toss the rock to, Edwards now becomes a legit fantasy sleeper and a solid QB2 option in deep leagues.
Overall, don’t get too confused with this move folks, Buffalo is simply taking a page out of division rival New England’s book. It’s been only two short years since the Pats took the same “chance” on a then troubled WR named Randy Moss. See how that turned out for them?
