The NFL Free Agency action continued as 35 year old talented veteran WR Terrell Owens was released by the Cowboys early Thursday morning, and other veteran guys like Laveranues Coles, LaMont Jordan and Torry Holt are also in the headlines.
Terrell Owens Released By Cowboys - Before Roy Williams owners get too excited about this move, they need to remember that Roy Boy is not a gamer, he’s injury prone, and he’s just as weird a personality as Owens. Will Roy get more opportunities now that T.O. is gone? Absolutely - but will that make him a number 1 fantasy WR heading into 2009? Not by a long shot. This move will - however, increase the fantasy value of Jason Witten and Patrick Crayton, as Tony Romo can now look their way without being analyzed to death. As for T.O., we realize he was a disruption in Dallas, but we’re still surprised by this move. The guy can still play, and his skills haven’t diminished at all. He’ll definitely latch on somewhere. Teams like the Jets, Raiders and Buccaneers all are in desperate need of legit WR options. T.O. dynasty owners shouldn’t worry yet - he still has one or two solid fantasy seasons left in him.
Laveranues Coles Signs with Cincy - The 31 year old veteran signed a four year, $28 million deal with the Bengals, ensuring him a starting gig opposite Chad Johnson as long as he stays healthy. Coles can be a reception hog, and if Carson Palmer plays 16 games, look for Coles to be a solid fantasy WR3 in 2009. This move definitely salvages his value, as he could have ended up in worse situations.
LaMont Jordan Signs with Denver - 30 year old RB LaMont Jordan signed a two year, $2.5 million deal with the Broncos. Obviously Josh McDaniels saw something he liked in Jordan last season, and wanted to add even more warm bodies to the Broncos backfield. With Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington, Jordan and a few of last year’s holdovers on the roster, anything can happen with regards to who starts or gets time. We’ll follow this situation, as a starter should emerge during the pre-season.
Torry Holt Requests Release from St. Louis - 32 year old WR Torry Holt has requested his release from St. Louis, and we believe the Rams will give it to him. We could see him re-joining Isaac Bruce in San Francisco, or ending up in Miami, Tampa or with either New York team. The Cleveland Browns also may have a need at WR if they trade Braylon Edwards.
Nate Washington Signs with Tennessee - 25 year old 6′1″ pass catcher Nate Washington signed a six year $27 million deal with the Titans. Wow. This is big enough money to assume he’ll be starting in 2009 for sure. Washington could definitely blossom into a weapon if he’s on the field consistently. We’re anxious to monitor the early chemistry between he and Kerry Collins in off-season workouts.
Other free agent signings: WR Devery Henderson re-signed with the Saints, LB Ray Lewis re-signed with the Ravens, QB Chris Simms signed with the Broncos and TE Robert Royal signed with the Browns.
