Will The Real Steve Smith Please Stand Up?

Will The Real Steve Smith Please Stand Up?While there was a literal changing of places this week with Braylon Edwards being traded to the Jets, there has seemingly been a figurative one brewing as well. Since entering the league in 2007, the Steve Smith that plays for the New York Giants has been known by fantasy owners as either “Steve Smith (NYG)” or “The Other Steve Smith.” Now, he’s simply – Steve Smith. After hauling in six or more balls in each game this season, including 10 for 134 yards and a score in Week 2 and 11 for 134 yards and two scores in Week 4, he is one of fantasy football’s best wide receivers, and don’t expect that to change. If you own Smith in a keeper or dynasty league, you’ve found yourself a long term stud, and if you’re a seasonal owner, he should be in your line-up every week. Sure, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks and Domenik Hixon will rotate and see targets, but Smith will always be the constant in the rotation – and the Peyton Manning/Marvin Harrison-esque chemistry between he and Eli Manning can’t be denied. Even if Eli misses time, Smith can’t be benched. And what about the “New Other Steve Smith?” You know, the guy that plays in Carolina. Well, he’s bookended a solid game in Week 2 with two very subpar performances, and the passing game is a mess in Carolina with Jake Delhomme struggling and a lack of options to take defensive attention off Smith. There are a couple favorable match-ups coming up for the Panthers’ passing attack, with Tampa Bay in Week 6 and Buffalo in Week 7, so I’m not saying give up on Smith (CAR) just yet, but after he produces in those weeks, it might be a great time to sell him.
