For early April, it’s been pretty darn busy, with Jay Cutler being dealt to Chicago, and the Giants’ officially cutting ties with Plaxico Burress. Various player values are obviously fluctuating as a result of these moves, so let’s jump right in.
Cutler’s value, along with that of Matt Forte, Devin Hester and Greg Olsen - is rising big time right now - click here for a full analysis. However, there is a huge debate brewing on our forums about the value of Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall - so please feel free to chime in.
Rising - Domenik Hixon, Giants WR - When Plaxico Burress missed Week 5 due to a team suspension in 2008, Domenik Hixon hauled in four passes for 102 yards and a TD in the first half against the Seahawks prior to leaving with an injury. We could be seeing more performances like that from Hixon after the Giants officially cut ties with Burress. The 6′2″ 24 year old from Akron will step into the number one WR role in 2009 and should be considered a very solid WR3 in all leagues with a high ceiling. He caught some slack from media after dropping a deep ball against the Eagles in Week 14, but caught four or more balls in five of his last six regular season contests. The Giants will add another WR or two this year, but are more likely to do so via the draft, rather than trading for or signing an established one. This means Hixon will have a serious shot at fantasy stardom in 2009.
As for who the Giants will target with their first round pick, we have to believe Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey and Rutgers’ Kenny Britt are their top targets, with Cal Poly’s Ramses Barden being a potential second round option.
Rising - Steve Smith, Giants WR - Plaxico is gone, and so is Amani Toomer, leaving the third year man from USC in prime position to start and play a full time role as the possession threat for the Giants. Smith is definitely a PPR sleeper, as he hauled in 57 passes a year ago and should fly past that total easily in 2009. His dynasty owners should definitely hang onto him, as his value will only go up this season, and if he can be bought low in your league - go for it immediately.
Rising - Josh Bullocks, Bears S - The Bears signed the 26 year old to compete to start at strong safety. A former top IDP when with the Saints a few years ago, he fell off the radar due to injury issues. If he can stay healthy, he’ll definitely be roster worthy in all leagues with Mike Brown gone.
Rising - Cato June, Texans LB - Houston signed the 29 year old veteran journeyman to a one year, $1.5 million contract, and while he’s unlikely to be an IDP stud, he’s back on the radar now as he’ll compete to start on the weak side over Xavier Adibi. If SLB Zach Diles goes down, June would fill in there as well. He’s not draftable, but worthy of monitoring now in deep IDP leagues as a potential early season waiver wire pick-up.
Falling - Plaxico Burress, Free Agent WR - Quite simply, he’s done folks. Even early in the season last year, all signs pointed to Plax’s eventual demise. Sure enough, he shot himself in the leg shortly thereafter, and now faces jail time. His dynasty value is totally gone at this point, and even though there may be early interest, we’d be shocked if any NFL team actually touches this guy anytime soon.
