Check it out peeps, quickly. One of last year’s breakout fantasy stars is seeing his value plummet, and owners drafting early in the summer months could be affected if they don’t wise-up immediately. Also, check out who - do to a role change - definitely will not be having a comeback season.
Le’Ron McClain, Ravens FB - It’s very easy to assume that 24 year old Ravens running back Le’Ron McClain will have a great statistical season after carrying the rock 20 or more times in each of the last five games in 2008, racking up season totals of 907 yards and 10 TDs on the ground. It may also be easy to assume that a 260 lb. McClain will be the lead back in Baltimore this year - but by assuming both of those things, you’d be totally wrong. In fact, McClain filled in last year at tailback after injuries slowed Willis McGahee and rookie Ray Rice at the beginning of the season. Speaking of Rice, word is that he’ll be the starter this season, while McGahee will take on more of a complimentary role. So, what will happen to McClain? And why the sudden change in fantasy value? Simple. He’ll be moving back to fullback. That’s right. Lorenzo Neal is in Oakland now, and McClain is ready to resume less glorious duties. He’s also reportedly put on 20 pounds of weight, which would put him at 280 - way too large for a tailback. We’re writing this now, to make early drafters fully aware of the fact that McClain’s carries could be almost completely wiped out in 2009.
Laurence Maroney, Patriots RB - For those of you thinking that fourth year man Laurence Maroney could possibly come back from an injury-shortened four-game 93 yard season from a year ago - think twice. Not only did the Patriots bring in Fred Taylor to compete with Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk for carries, but Maroney has apparently been returning kicks in off-season practices. Not that this means he won’t compete for carries, but it’s not a great sign for his fantasy value. Seasonal owners, take a late round flier on him if you must, but dynasty owners should steer clear.
