I remember last December, around the holiday season and New Year's specifically, prices of ultra modern basketball and football cards dipped significantly. The player didn't matter, everything was down, and people were freaking out a bit. Then sure enough, everything rose in the New Year, as people's attention came back into the NFL Playoffs, the NBA Season, F1 season lead-up hype began and the hot stove league picked up in baseball.

Also, it didn't hurt that the release calendar picks up in Q1 each year.
