Top Five Ways To Flip Cards To Fund Your Personal Collection (PC)

Questions that get asked a lot are, How do I get started with only this much for a budget? How did you get such a large collection? Is it only people that have a lot of money that can make money flipping cards? To make this work you need really expensive graded cards right? Well, I am going to do my best to answer these questions and more! First of all you need to establish yourself a budget that you are comfortable with. It can be any amount, there is no right or wrong answer. Once you have established an amount you have to work with you need a plan! I am going to talk about several ways for you to grow out your PC with out spending a ton of money. So lets start with a few different ways you can accomplish this. I have found the most profitable and easiest way to get started is to look on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and the local classifieds for someone near you looking to sell off their entire collection. Typically you can buy someone’s collection and piece it out little by little. Typically you can sell off the most liquid items from the collection to cover what you paid for it, and then everything else is profit or keep for your personal collection. The key here is to know what you are buying. Just like buying single cards not every deal is a good deal. Look thru or get a list of some key cards from the collection and price them out. Make sure you have an exit strategy for the collection before you buy it. Although I have found this to be the most profitable and best way to grow your collection or fund your additional purchases, this requires the most time and effort as you need to sort thru 1000’s of cards and sell off singles to make your money. There are also websites that you can buy cards from in an auction format. There are too many to list, but I will list a few of the ones that I have used to grow and fund my collection. There is EBAY, Whatnot, Loupe, and HiBid. All 4 of these site requires you to have a username and password. From a “flipping“ standpoint, Whatnot is the easiest way to turn a profit. Whatnot is a LIVE real time auction platform. Typically you can get some great deals on there if you look to find a room that has card lot auctions to buy. Another tip is to look for rooms that have 20 or less people in them. The more people in the room, the less likely chance of getting “a deal”! Once you get cards from here you can again look to sell off individual cards on Facebook, EBAY, Myslabs, or one of the many other great card sites out there. Going to local shows is another great way to buy and flip sports cards. Combing thru someone’s bulk cards in boxes at shows for $1 to $10 a card is a great “flipping opportunity” as well. Often times these dealers put cards in these boxes and don’t have time to go back thru them on a regular basis. So the trick here is to look for cards that have recently become hot that started at about $1. Maybe you find a handful of cards for $1 a piece and you are able to resell them for $3 apiece. You just tripled your investment! Much like the 1st idea of buying an entire collection this takes time and patience. When I go to a card show I try to give myself at least 4 hours dedicated to just bargain shopping thru these bulk boxes. Also at card shows towards the end of the shows dealers are a bit more likely to take offers on cards. So wait it out and as the show starts to wind down remember what tables had cards you wanted and go make them an offer of 20% or more off the asking price. The worst thing that happens is you hear no! If you never hear the word no you are offering too much out of the gate! The next way to flip cards for profit is grading cards. I would suggest that you buy a card magnifier or seek out a local card shop or friend that has experience in grading cards. The first few times you try there will be a learning curve. So be prepared to possibly lose a little money when you 1st start out grading cards. Learning what to look for and what cards will come back graded as takes some really good eyes, and many learning lessons before someone gets really good at it. However, buying raw cards from a local card shop, online auctions, from collections that you purchase, or buying packs and ripping them yourself and then sending them off to a card grading company can be very profitable as well. It is not uncommon for a perfect GEM MINT 10 graded card to be worth anywhere from 4x to as much as 20x what the raw card might be worth. So buying a card for lets say $1 and sending it in for grading say it costs you an additional $20 for grading and shipping, that’s $21 investment. If research tells you that the card sells for $50 in Gem Mint 10 condition you can double your investment. Once you get into grading cards, another way to make a “flip” is to buy a card from a reputable grading company with a half grade such as a 9.5, cracking the slab open and resubmitting in hopes of getting a Gem Mint 10. Once again, this takes a little bit of skill and practice so you don’t damage the card in the slab you are cracking it out of. However this method gives you a better opportunity to not get burned by a really low grade. Most of the quality grading companies grade similarly , so the odds of cracking a 9.5 and it coming back a 7 or an 8 are pretty low. However going from a 9.5 to a 10 can in some cases double, triple, or quadruple your investment!
