What Effect Will Victor Wembanyama Have On His Spurs Teammates Cards?

Once in a decade or maybe more, a player comes into the league and changes the game. Think about players like Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem, Dr J, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Steph Curry to name a few. These players came with great hype and all significantly altered the game of basketball with their style of play. Enter the 2023 NBA draft a guy by the name of Victor Wembanyama. He is one of the tallest players to ever play in the NBA but shoots and handles the ball like a guard, and can dominate the paint with his size and defense. He is the greatest hyped player since 2003 when a guy named Lebron James entered the NBA. This is not only good for the NBA, but it is good for the card market too. A guy like this can single handedly take a flat or slightly down market and turn it into a profitable market. All of this hype will also drive people to look for other star cards either current or in the past. The attention is a good thing for the hobby! With that said, what will it do for the San Antonio Spurs? Here is a paragraph from the Spurs team home page “Mendoza, citing Spurs senior corporate communications coordinator Lucy Kaneb, wrote that San Antonio "saw a 3,000% increase in year-over-year online traffic and sales" in the two days following Victor Wembanyama's selection in the NBA draft.” Can you imagine 3000% increase? They also sold 4000+ season ticket packages in that same amount of time! Will Wemby have an effect on other Spurs players cards?
Keldon Johnson was the best player on the Spurs prior to the draft. He isn’t a mega superstar, but he is plenty good enough to be an NBA All Star! Johnson was a 1st round pick in 2019. He has increased his minutes and stats every year in the league. This past year he average 22 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game. The 22 ppg were a career high for Johnson. The addition of Wemby should help free up Johnson from being the focal point of attention for opposing defenses allowing his number to get even better this year! Right now with all eyes on Wemby it is a perfect time to start thinking about acquiring some Keldon Johnson!
