The Importance Of The Annual Modern Sports Card Release Calendar When I started collecting cards in the late 1980s, the first set I remember trying to build was 1989 Hoops Basketball. Back then, building sets and tracking the checklist was easy. There was a Series 1 and a Series 2. Each player had one base card. There was an All-Star subset checklist. That’s basically it. And that pretty much encapsulates how all sports card set checklists worked for decades before that, and for about just over two more decades after that. An evolution began between 2009-2019, as licensing between companies changed hands and brands were bought and sold across those companies, sets were produced that started to feature subsets with scarcity, relic and autographs were incorporated into cards, and a new generation of collectors began purchasing cards.
