Why I’m Investing In A Virtually Unknown F2 Driver Oscar Piastri – Am I Buying The Right F1 Cards?
So I wasn't smart enough to buy tons of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen short print refractors, serial numbered parallel refractors and autos when 2020 Topps Chrome F1 Cards came out.
I watched what happened closely, but never got involved. I, like maybe many of you, was buying more traditional sports - baseball, basketball, football and some soccer, and just didn't have much interested in getting involved in F1 at the time.
But with the release of 2021 Topps Chrome F1 and 2021 Topps F1, I've truly researched and dug in more than any other time in my sports card investing history - with the goal of trying to invest in "The Next Superstar F1 Drivers."
Certainly cases can be made for Mike Schumacher (the name, pedigree and Haas Racing US Connection), Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lando Norris and even Carlos Sainz, as they are more proven than the guy I decided to invest huge in.
I went with Oscar Piastri because he has dominated F3 and F2, is only 20 years old, is next up for either Alpine or McLaren in F1, and has banger cards at pretty affordable prices.
If you're a sports card investor, you may appreciate the analogy of buying Wander Franco's cards a couple years ago, but if you're an F1 investor, you already know about him and probably think he's a bit overpriced based on what you could buy with the money people are spending on Piastri.
The main reason I'm buying him is because I'm banking on the F2 cards that have been released in the 2021 Topps Chrome F1 set being recognized as his first and true prospect cards, and being more valuable than any that come out with the RC logo on them in the future.
That said, I'm not looking for a quick flip with him. I want him to go out and win races, and over the next 2-4 years. If that happens, the cards I'm holding will likely be at least 5x what they are now, and I'll be in great shape to cash out and reinvest at that point.
I'd love your thoughts on Piastri or any other F1 / F2 prospects.
