Anticipating the Upcoming NFL QB Shuffle | Sports Card Investment Advice
To make money investing in sports cards, you have to anticipate what’s to come, develop a theory, and execute against it. This piece is all about anticipating what might happen over the next few months related to NFL QBs moving teams. Then, it’s on you to develop your own theories and execute - or not.
Remember, if you believe in any of the below guys, you have to buy them now, before they move teams, because if you wait until the news breaks - you’ll be buying the hype, which is a recipe for losses more often than not in the sports card investing game.
Anticipate what’s to come, and be rewarded when you’re right.
Guest contributor Ryan Hoffman provided the QB analysis below, and I put the sports card investment angle on this piece.
We’ve seen some big splashes by some big fish so far this off-season (check out our Sports Card Investment Report on Russell Wilson here), and it will inevitably affect what other teams choose to do at the QB position. We can start by saying that many NFL scouts have labeled the 2022 QB draft class as underwhelming. So teams that are looking for an immediate need at QB, likely won’t be able to rely on the draft for a quick fix. With that being said, let’s jump into the teams and QBs who may be making news this offseason.
There are a handful of teams that could use an immediate upgrade. They are…
The Teams
Pittsburgh Steelers
Seattle Seahawks
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Carolina Panthers
Indianapolis Colts
A few other teams that have a QB in house, but the jury is still out…
New Orleans Saints
Houston Texans
New York Giants
The QB’s
Deshaun Watson –
Watson is the biggest rumored name remaining for a team to acquire. Any move for Watson would be through a trade, but his legal situation needs to become more clear before anything happens.
2017 Prizm Silver PSA 10 - sold for $600 on March 9
2017 Optic Base PSA 10 - sold for $225 on March 10
Jimmy Garoppolo –
Another name that can be acquired through a trade is Jimmy G. Trey Lance is the guy in SF, so Jimmy will be wearing a new uniform in 2022.
2014 Topps Chrome Base PSA 10 - sold for $36 on March 9
Jameis Winston –
Jameis was 5-2 (14TD, 3INT) before getting injured last year. The Saints know his weaknesses and game-planned accordingly. Top QB free agent on the market.
2015 Topps Chrome Base PSA 10 - sold for $40 on March 3
2015 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $75 on February 20
Teddy Bridgewater –
Teddy is coming off his best season since 2015 but will likely be headed to his 5th team in 8 seasons.
2014 Contenders Rookie Ticket Auto BGS 9.5 - sold for $39.99 on March 8
Marcus Mariota –
Spending the last 2 seasons as a backup to Carr, it appears Mariota may get another shot at a starting gig.
2015 Topps Chrome Base PSA 10 - sold for $30 on March 9
2015 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $43 on February 16
Mitchel Trubisky –
If Trubisky lands in a spot where he can compete for a starting spot, his stock will rise
2017 Prizm Silver PSA 10 - sold for $199 on March 9
Jordan Love –
With Aaron Rodgers’ new deal in place, Love will never see the field again for the Packers it appears. Will the Packers ship him somewhere to help them go “all-in” like the Rams and apparently the Broncos are doing? If so, where will Love end up?
2020 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $59 on March 9
And A Few Dark Horses
Kirk Cousins –
With Rodgers sticking in GB, and with many teams seeking a trusted QB, is now the time to try and move Cousins and his big contract?
2012 Topps Chrome Base PSA 10 - sold for $42 on March 10
2012 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $74.99 on January 7
Baker Mayfield –
Baker might not be the future in Cleveland. Would the Browns make him available for a trade?
2018 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $110.50 on March 8
2018 Optic Base PSA 10 - sold for $82.83 on March 9
Kyler Murray –
Sounds like the Cardinals want to see more from Murray before they commit long term. Probably a long-shot, but moving Murray would be a bold move by this organization
2019 Prizm Base PSA 10 - sold for $165.50 on March 6
The question is, should you buy any of these cards right now, before they move teams? If any, I like Cousins, Watson, Love and Murray the most. Mainly because I could see them retaining value even if they don’t move to a new team.
That said, we recommend continuing to follow the pricing movement on each of these guys by going to MarketMoversApp.com. You can get a free trial or save 20% on your first month by using the promo code “nooffseason” or using this referral link.
Most of the names listed above are dirt cheap, and if you do buy them now, I think they all should be sold at the peak of the hype post-movement to a new team.
Don’t wait for the season to start to sell them, because you’ll just be reminded of how mediocre they are.
So the ideal situation is to grab a few cheap PSA 10 rookies now of the guys you believe in most, then sell immediately post trade/free agency.
Buy low, sell the hype.
